@caesarisattva @LIgfried One can prefer Ovid to Vergil (as one could prefer Milton to Shakespeare) but I don’t think anyone would seriously contend that Ovid is the more canonical poet of the Latin language. (Although he was often the more enjoyed poet)

Judging by the incoherent responses, it seems French doesn’t have an author that is so clearly head and shoulders above the rest as Shakespeare is in English, Homer in Greek, Vergil in Latin.
