2025 was een turbulent jaar. Na enkele dagen is duidelijk dat 2026 nog turbulenter wordt. Krachtmeting De mondiale krachtmeting tussen het Westen en de anti-Westerse krachten bereikt stilaan haar kookpunt nu het communistisch-dictatoriaal Venezuelaans leiderschap opgesloten zit en het theocratisch-dictatoriaal regime in Iran zwaar onder druk staat door massale straatprotesten. De klassieke anti-Westerse ‘as van vijf’: China, Rusland, Noord-Korea, Iran, Venezuela, lijkt verzwakt uit deze confrontatie te komen. Venezuela Toen ik in het NAVO parlement zetelde, kregen we jaarlijks een week lang geopolitieke briefings aan de National Defense University in Washington DC. Het viel me toen op hoeveel militair-academische publicaties er in de rekken lagen over Centraal- en Zuid-Amerika, met de hoofdfocus op Venezuela, veel meer dan over Rusland of over de NAVO bijvoorbeeld. Diaspora Een land dat quasi niet op de Europese radar staat, is voor de VS al jaren een topprioriteit. Drugs, olie, grondstoffen en een ‘amazing’ ego spelen hierbij een rol. Maar onderschat het electorale belang van de diaspora niet. De miljoenen vluchtelingen uit de communistische dictaturen in Centraal- en Zuid-Amerika bepalen mee de immer nipte verkiezingsrace in de States. En die gaan tegenwoordig eerder naar rechts dan naar links. Met de cruciale Midterms op 4/11 in het vooruitzicht, lijkt een offensief tegen deze regimes electoraal aantrekkelijk. Internationaal recht De discussie over de schending van het internationaal recht is meer dan lastig vanuit Westers perspectief, aangezien de confrontatie tussen de twee blokken o.a. de erkenning van de ‘international rules based order’ als inzet heeft. Het Westen verdedigt het internationaal recht, terwijl de anti-Westerse krachten deze net ondermijnen en van tafel willen. Elke eigen ondermijning van het internationaal recht is daarbij koren op de molen van onze vijanden. Immuniteit Washington zal aanhalen dat er van een schending geen sprake is omdat Maduro - na de massale verkiezingsfraude en gestolen presidentsverkiezingen - geen rechtmatig president meer is en dus geen internationaal rechterlijke immuniteit geniet. Een netelige kwestie en voer voor juristen internationaal recht en de Verenigde Naties. Desalniettemin het blijft opletten voor de kritiek van de ‘twee maten, twee gewichten’, die ook tijdens de Gaza-oorlog mondiaal het anti-Westerse ressentiment verder oppookte en ons ferm pijn deed. Europa Europa houdt zich eerder afzijdig. Buiten wat communistische heethoofden ligt er niemand echt wakker van Venezuela. Met een monsterlijke oorlog op het eigen continent heeft Europa eerst haar eigen huishouden op orde te zetten. Zowel economisch als militair staan we momenteel te zwak. De jaarlijkse rellen op Oudjaar bevestigen trouwens deze les in nederigheid. ‘Wie zijn wij/jullie om anderen aldoor de les te spellen?’ leeft in vele hoofden.
