Building your own skills for an AI agent, and building on the foundation of commoditized skills that you found on GitHub, etc., will always lead to a better operational outcome. Even if your own skills are worse at first, the gap can be closed easily. What separates a seemingly better external skill from your own is the depth of iteration and collaboration between an individual and a frontier model, contextualized by that individual’s domain expertise. e.g. If you are a marketing professional looking to automate specific functions within the marketing vertical, building a unique skill from scratch informed by your needs will lead to greater productivity, specifically because you designed the spec in the first place.

I’ve coined this effect “Cinematic Slop.” So how do you avoid it? How do you maximize the effectiveness of your content strategy? How do you build advocacy with your audience? Read my full blog here:

“What is New Media” was published by @a16z in Nov. 2025. Since then demand for video-centric distribution strategy has grown exponentially. The downstream effect is that as more people adopt this approach, the quality of content will drop.
EMILY SUNDBERG@Emily_Sundberg

Between Anthropic hiring a video director for $250k, and WSJ announcing that their video team is now 65 people, I think it's a really good time for young people to learn how to shoot and edit video. Tech companies and legacy media companies are investing in GOOD video teams

I recently asked “I wonder what [person]’s openclaw would think about this?” Not that I believe the agent is yet an adequate proxy for someone’s perspective. Rather, I was curious to see if the agent is capable of forming unique perspective informed by its user’s accumulated context. If so, two conclusions follow: 1. direct access to someone’s personal agent is valuable and intimate, and safeguards are necessary to guide what information it is allowed to disseminate about its user. 2. the context of the owner of an agent bears as much epistemic weight as its output, product, etc. (These exist at odds and will be an ongoing consideration.)

i think crypto marketing is going to change quite a bit soon "interning" is dead and shitposting gets old fast when the market isn't turbo sending believe there will be major shift toward substance and narrative building marketers who have a deep understanding of the tech, dogfood their products, and are in tune with ecosystem/builders are best positioned to win

Agentic skills are commoditized. They are non-rivalrous by construction: unproprietary and convergent in spec. I’m more interested in the unique context built from someone’s interactions with their own agents, and the skills that emerge as representations of their own milieu.

Setting up an openclaw is just difficult enough to stay inaccessible to retail. Instead, it has lowered the barrier of entry just enough to lure tinkerers into the enjoyment of troubleshooting, of iterating on imperfect technical processes. I think the average openclaw user gets more joy in customizing their harnesses and agentic workflows than from output itself.

My experience with AI has been contextualized by creatives, rather than developers. In 2023, they told me that the use of these tools were combative to the creative process and diminished the final product. Many of my artist friends pushed back against the use of AI in marketing, media, etc. I subscribed to this same definition in my own work out of respect for the artists. I think a lot of their context was informed by trauma and frustration through stolen art, generative art, and generalized negative experiences. The first tinkerers were themselves informed by Google DeepDream dogs and Midjourney in Discord. Then the tools became better, and as the gap in technical skill narrowed, the edge in creative expression widened. The learning curve lowered and tinkerers blossomed. Tinkerers as some halfway point between the technical and nontechnical crowd, classified as creative problem solvers. Anyway, the most uninspired person you know and the creatives are both on Claude Code, but only one has a vision to execute.

TBPN has become the layer through which tech tells its stories. I worked with @tbpn recently on content that shared their brand story, to capture the feeling of being a fan or member of their community. OpenAI should target this same distribution in media, capturing audiences that exist in the overlap of tech culture, content creation, and AI. Congrats gents, well deserved!

TBPN has been acquired by OpenAI! The show is staying the same and we’ll continue to go live at 11am pacific every weekday. This is a full circle moment for me as I’ve worked with @sama for well over a decade. He funded my first company in 2013. Then helped us fix a serious logjam during a critical funding round a few years later. When I took my second company through YC, he was president at the time, and then when I joined Founders Fund, the first deal I saw in motion was the post-ChatGPT round in late 2022. And as we started growing TBPN last year, he was the very first lab lead to join the show. Thank you to everyone that has been a part of TBPN until now. The last year has been the most fun and rewarding part of my career and we’re excited to have more resources than ever going forward.
