@jasonc_nc @LinkofSunshine not necessarily, different cities have different commuting flows therefore it's incorrect to compare cities by average (geographic) commute time than by average (commuters) commuting time

@LinkofSunshine So youโ€™re saying the most common use case in a dense city is more like around your general neighborhood vs choosing to visit the furthest point away from you each day?

It's a cool paper, but the assumption that people are equally likely to start and end at any given point makes this kind of useless imo? It just rewards smaller cities like Paris, most trips in NYC are midtown to midtown instead of random people going to Staten Island
Giulio Mattioli@giulio_mattioli

Very interesting new study finding that *even in large European cities*, in most places it is easier to access opportunities by car than by public transport arxiv.org/pdf/2604.01019 The exceptions are Paris, Zurich and the innermost parts of Milan and Barcelona

@StefanFrancisci a lower population isn't the problem, a declining population drains government finances, though. a rising population means that future generations can more easily fund today's expenditures

@Piedo69 @AZinCLE the biggest issue Florence has is crossing the center, it's peripheral transit and bike access is quite decent. colle strade e folle che ci sono in centro bici sono scomodissime

@ShumBaloo @SantiPerales76 @mannieigwe "Low Grade" c'mon, pompeu fabra, bocconi, Insead are all better economics schools than Warwick and better business schools than LBS . so no, British students arent just sunbathing, but are actually getting a world class education better than what they could've gotten at home

So, Britain would have to pay the EU ยฃ570m next year, followed by ยฃ840m in future years for the privilege of joining this scheme. The Turing scheme is more targeted, cheaper (ยฃ110m per year), has broader global reach and only funds British talent. Tell me something Erasmus+ offers British students that Turing doesn't.

@ChimeraX2021 I find reducing a speed limit by only 10mph on a rural road, then wasting taxpayer money on installing overly invasive surveillance equipment to enforce it as a moneymaking ploy objectionable. At no point did I say I wanted to break the law

I often punch left. I am, on fiscal matters, rather conservative โ€” although I like welfare for the poor, Iโ€™d like to cut it for seniors and veterans. But for all that, I *hate* the modern conservative movement. I want it extirpated from the earth.
