I don’t claim to know the right punishment. But the wildest part of this story is that she can get her license back. Mary Lau’s defense claimed she hit 70+ mph because she mixed up the gas & the brake. If you’re too old to tell the difference there, you’re too old to be driving.

A driver who killed a family of four, including two babies, at a San Francisco bus stop was sentenced to probation. Mary Fong Lau (seen here walking through the courthouse today) dodged jail and prison time. Lau, 80, was speeding when her Mercedes SUV plowed into a West Portal bus stop in 2024, investigators said. A family was waiting to catch the bus for a trip to the zoo. The crash killed Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, his wife, Matilde Pinto, and their two babies. Painter’s point is excellent. The functional problem with college sports is everyone is highly incentivized to do what’s best for themselves and there is very little incentive to act in the best interest of the enterprise as a whole.

As you realize the college sports you grew up with doesn’t exist anymore, it hits you that it may have all been a facade.
The reason these teams below existed was largely to players being exploited with no ability to make money & punished for transferring.
NIL introduced….cream rises to the top. In 2012 a guy who fell through the cracks in recruiting would spend 4 years at a mid major and develop there…not anymore. 80% of those players trickle up to make the major conference teams that were losing in 2008 better in 2026.
College sports was prob better in 2010 but it was due to a model that unequivocally ripped off athletes.
I am open to being wrong here, but the game has changed forever and what we watched years ago was fake.

The NCAA tournament went to 64 teams in 1985. Only 7 times have the 13-14-15 seeds all gone winless in the first round.
It's now happened two years in a row (for the first time).
