From a media call today: The Senate Republican Commerce Committee remains hopeful the Protect College Sports Act will come up for vote by end of the week. But the Senate agenda this week also includes: government funding, Russia sanctions, a crypto bill and 2 confirmations.

@Indiana_Fight If they go 16-0 every year, they won't have a problem. If they go 10-2 and are on the bubble, that approach may bite them.

@slmandel Why is everybody so obsessed with who Indiana plays in the non-conference? We just beat six Top 10 teams and were 16-0 National Champions. I don’t think we need anyone telling us how we should go about scheduling strategy or how to run a program

@cdusk They could have but you’d be in the exact same situation, or worse, bc high school signees might have been dropped.

@slmandel Not a totally true statement. The discussion of 5/5 has been going on for over a year. The question was when exactly it would be implemented and how. The NCAA waited until the end of the school year to pass and excluded the class of 2022, which they could have included.

Thousands of athletes suddenly have a fifth year they weren’t expecting, but with roster limits and no portal window, won’t be many spots. Meanwhile anyone who signed a pro contract is still ineligible, going to have to file their own lawsuit. And school is about to start.
Sam C. Ehrlich@samcehrlich

Judge Sweeney has issued an order clarifying the scope of the injunction issued Friday night. In doing so, she clarified that her injunction ONLY grants athletes in the class a fifth year. It *does not* enjoin transfer rules, roster caps, rev share caps, etc.

@cesardlg @ralphDrussoATH No. There are just 2 different rev share pools, one for retention, one for recruits. And then they *swear* nothing else above that.

SEC and Big Ten presidents have signed off on the latest version of Protect College Sports Act, which includes a new "retention" cap on top of the current House cap. Schools could spend ~ $48M in rev-share on their athletes, up from $20.5 last yr. Now the race is on to get it to the Senate floor before Friday.

@slmandel Thousands of emails will be sent to HS Sr recruits in non-pro sports telling them there's no room on rosters next year because grad students are going to come back and play & SRs get another year. No spots will be open. Nightmare for my daughter who's a 2027 softball recruit.

There is a section in the bill that says conferences cannot expand beyond 19. There is also the Cody Campbell wish to allow conferences to pool their TV rights. Voluntary, not required.
B_Dots@BBgunn42

@slmandel What does this mean for conference expansion? Most if not all fans are just ready for a final shift so we can see where everyone settles

This is going to be absolute mess in football if it stands given the timing. We’ll probably see guys who get cut in NFL training camp trying to rush back for a 5th year only to find no spots.

"It’s not that we don’t want them to sit, it’s that most of our students don’t *want* to sit." More on the European soccer-style "Safe Standing" student section at Northwestern's new $875 million Ryan Field. (Yes, there are other places they can sit, @lucy_rohden) Free story nytimes.com/athletic/74819…

Touring Northwestern’s new Ryan Field for the first time. Will debut Oct. 2. The lower deck (including the student section) could not be much closer to the field. Also, there are no seats in the student section. They want them standing the whole time.
