I don’t know or care enough about Harry Potter to dig into this, but I do sometimes wonder if the other magic schools are all basically horrified by Hogwarts just putting a bunch of kids in a group and telling them they’re probably evil. Seems like bad pedagogy!

To be fair, the meaning of their lives seems to be fated, more or less preordained. The first thing that happens when they get there is that a talking hat tells them if they’re going to good, evil, smart, or completely forgettable. And then they are!

@Nowooski People who ski do it a lot more than people who bowl and spend a lot more doing it. Vail Resorts is a $4b market cap company. Many big ski equipment businesses as well plus resorts etc. Whole communities built around it. Lucky Strike is $1b mkt cap and small presence everywhere.

Skiing has got to be the most over-covered hobby in America. It generates regular NYT and WSJ stories. People tweet about Vail as if it’s a large business. Yet the percent of Americans who ski has been stagnant for decades. Bowling enjoys 3x the participation.

@BamaBonds covid overhiring is the real story buried under the AI narrative. block went 3900 to 12500 in three years, revenue didn't triple. the 4000 cut puts them at 6000, still 50% above pre-covid. calling this an AI transformation requires ignoring the baseline entirely.

@DavidAFrench You haven't fixed it, just changed it. Now the teams in the middle of the pack will tank just enough to get 10. Think Orlando, Charlotte, Miami wouldn't rather have #1 pick than get blasted by a top seed in round 1? Only fix is lottery odds independent of record.

I’m going to fix the NBA’s tanking problem right now:
Draft order is the reverse order of non-playoff teams. Best team to miss the play-in gets first pick, then the order is determined from there. (Second-best team to miss play-in gets second pick, and so on).
All the worst teams will have huge incentives to play hard.

The thing we ought to note: the flow of people South & West goes back 70+ years. A famous political scientist even credited it to air conditioning. It’s only seen as a red state/blue state thing now that Fl is bright red & CA is shedding population.

Calling a timeout there was a disaster. If you fail with three timeouts, you can still get the ball back using your timeouts with a stop. Now, the game came down to one play.
