@MarkDavis …and it was a dangerous mess. We need to figure out a better way to recover the crew. We could have lost crew, pilots, and divers in all that rotor wash, hauling them over the water in a horse collar…

The shuttle landed like a plane, Russian spacecraft land on land (ouch), and the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsules are picked up by private recovery ships. Artemis is the first Navy recovery since the joint US-Soviet Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975.

@realhomerhickam Just back the LPD up and winch it in, ala SpaceX’s Dragon recovery. Simple, works good, fewer moving parts.

One lesson learned (I hope) on Artemis II is this is no way to recover a crew on the ocean. I'm sure they were indeed "green" by the time they got them out and then dragged out of a raft in rotor wash and hung out over the sea... no, we need to do better there, a lot better.

So if the command module has pyro valves for SM separation that doesn't really suggest an easily reusable spacecraft.

NEW: The Artemis II crew experienced another issue with the spacecraft toilet overnight. "We tried to vent the wastewater tank that's attached to the toilet. We had problems with that due to suspected blockage, we think, probably due to ice."

During a news conference today NASA's Shawn Quinn confirmed that a stop work order has been issued for the second Mobile Launch tower at Kennedy Space Center. This was a massively mismanaged program completely unnecessary for landing on the Moon, and richly deserved this fate.

@SciGuySpace 1) It’s been DONE. 2) No new technology…same big tank, same SRBs, same Apollo-looking capsule. 3) EVERY space writer has ONLY talked about costs and risks…nothing on “what will be gained” by this mission. So, what will be gained? What will we learn/discover/achieve?

I’m super excited for Artemis II. Been waiting my whole life for this first step back out there. But the media environment is so different today, and the world is vastly different as well. So far I have not seen this break through. Hopefully it does. Amazing crew to cheer on.
Everyday Astronaut@Erdayastronaut

I'm honestly SHOCKED at how the general public has NO IDEA Artemis II is taking humans out to the moon and will be the furthest humans have ever flown. Every non-space nerd I've talked to has no idea. WE GOTTA GET PEOPLE STOKED!!!! THESE FOUR HUMANS ARE FLYING TO THE MOON!!!

@DJSnM Sounds like the difference between Boeing and Airbus. Boeing aircrew fly the aircraft with computer backup/assist. Airbus crews monitor the computer that flies the aircraft.

The report on HLS development finds that it’s not going way over budget, but isn’t on time. Also, SpaceX and NASA disagree on the nature of manually flying a starship.

@DJSnM Hope they don’t lose a wingtip engine as the resulting yaw moment will be insane. Which is why fighters have their engines near centerline (0 Butt line) as possible

@GrimReapers_ Hello Cap! I know you’ve done simulated Iranian attacks on USN assets, but could the USN/GCC navies successfully escort a convoy of 20+ oil tankers without losing any to swarm or pinpoint attacks from the IRGC? Even sink enough in the straights to close the Gulf?

Reports coming in that it wasn't a SAM, but a Kuwaiti F/A-18 that shot down those three USAF F-15Es on Monday. If so, the F-15's perfect air-to-air record of 104 kills for zero losses is officially over!!! It’s a sad, big moment for #avgeeks - to see such a long streak end so suddenly, so publicly, and so brutally in a friendly fire mistake. Aviation history just turned a page.

@Aviation_Intel Considering that Patriots were originally designed as anti-aircraft weapons…yeah, they’re very good at shooting down airplanes, from any nation. Question is: who screwed up? ADA battery or USAF?

People who are saying a Patriot battery shooting down a friendly aircraft is nearly impossible have no clue what they are talking about or any idea of the history of them doing just that. Not saying that is what happened with the F-15Es, but just heads up on these takes. Many of which look like they read wikipedia or asked AI to give them and answer then reposted it.
