Music Business in Kenya is messed up because without active bookings, brand deals, commercial activism, no royalty is going to keep you afloat. Most artists if not all artists in Kenya barely receive their mechanical royalties. It takes good management to lobby for support via international organizations to keep track of some of the royalties which comes after a whole breakdown of taxes. Locally, artists have lost millions. One artists employs a good number of people. That money goes down into the economy supporting thousands of lives. One single proper show employs thousands of vendors. If you look at this issue in an economical angle you’ll realize that depriving artists their rights challenges their efforts in creating something proper and unique. Most artists stop commercially being involved in music because of such systems. As much as you’re talented you’d also want to do music as a business, and that’s where the challenge begins.

Mzee @OleItumbi Stop misleading artists. You claim CMOs are “fixed” and paying 70% via eCitizen since when? Show ONE verifiable list of artists paid. Most haven’t seen a cent. Why is the government handling private royalties? Under the Copyright Act (Kenya), that money belongs to artists not the State. How did funds move to eCitizen without artists’ consent? CMOs are not our right keepers. They don’t represent all artists only those who mandate them. No closed-door meetings. Call a public forum JKLive. Bring audited reports, legal backing, and proof of payment. Facts. Not PR.
