@dyba

I help engineering leaders convey their ideas clearly in writing and lead by example. Trouble getting heard and having an impact? Let's fix that.

Embedding a Google map inside of Google Docs. Can't be done. It's annoying, but I'll get over it.

@sh_reya @PreetumNakkiran Congratulations! 🎊 I’ve used this note-taking idea you mentioned in the past. 💯 I really like this idea of “taking out the trash” during the 1:1. It could be a great way to address any miscommunications that have built up during the week and ask for forgiveness.

I'm excited (and nervous) to post this thread: I've always known I wanted a partner but didn't know what a supportive one looked like (esp. as an ambitious woman who wants kids someday)! Now that I know, I'm so grateful for all the ways in which @PreetumNakkiran supports me:

@fortelabs The next time he gets asked to sculpt a horse, he must have done it in half the time… or gotten bored because it’s a solved problem.

@fortelabs I may be looking too deploy into it, but it seems to me he was looking for principles that have wider applications. Solve one problem (horse anatomy) and that leads to discovering principles that can be applied to several domains. It’s about leverage.

This is the 15 century version of endlessly optimizing your Notion workspace: Leonardo da Vinci was commissioned to create a statue of a man on horseback, but soon found himself writing a treatise on horse anatomy and inventing automated horse stables

@fortelabs I can’t help but be impressed by his desire for accuracy. It started with one thing but rabbit-holed into completely separate domains. I totally relate to that.

@wes_kao Great tips Wes! 👏🏼 I like the idea of backstory scope creep. It applies to engineering work: 1️⃣ Only discuss the solution: what are we doing about the problem? 2️⃣ If needed, explain why this is important 3️⃣ When prodded for details, discuss what back story informs the why

Public speaking is overrated. 75% of Americans say public speaking is their #1 fear. But I think it’s more important to be persuasive in day-to-day conversations. Here’s how to leverage everyday conversations (and move your career forward):

@wes_kao This is incredibly valuable Wes! 🙏🏼 Taking on the work before getting the promotion. So true 💯 In the end, managing up means doing more work on top of what you’re expected to deliver.

Here’s a secret about managing up: The more you manage up, the more your boss will recognize your value. It’s a Jedi mind trick. Let your boss think they’re managing you… But in reality, YOU are managing THEM. Here are 13 principles for managing up:

@amandanat I have these documents but not organized like this in tabs. Going to steal this idea. Thanks for sharing!

I recently bought a house and just met the sellers. They treated us to lunch and prepared these docs: handyman referrals, user manuals, and maintenance instructions. Even gave us the correct paint for touch-ups. This is wildly generous to me. Is this normal?!

@david_perell There are three main “ways” of reading it: The Protestant way to understand its influence in America The Catholic way to understand the influence on Protestantism and the arc of European history. The Eastern Orthodox way to understand Russia.

It’s insane that people are so averse to reading the Bible. By no means do you have to be a believer, but if you’re a Westerner, it’s influenced your life more than any other book and you should know what it says.

If people would pay for a faster TypeScript type checker, I could write one in C++ within two months that is much faster and 98% compatible with the current version. But I doubt people would pay a dime for it.

They bumped my base salary. By the end of the interview I cleared past the $100K mark. It turned out the manager shared the same values and followed the same people I did. Pick a stance. Champion it.

Pick a stance. Champion it. This wasn't obvious to me at first ... until I got hired after a string of rejections.
