I have some brutally honest insights on this matter. My experience is thus: -I always understood intellectually that kids were a good thing to have, and I presumed that I'd have them. -It's one thing when it's a far-off idea and another when your wife looks at you and says "well, now's the time." No, I don't want to. -In the end, I was persuaded. Few words were required. -When she revealed she was pregnant, I couldn't feign enthusiasm. I knew I should. I couldn't. It was all happening too fast. -And then it wasn't. A pregnancy in someone else's life happens quickly. A pregnancy in your own life takes forever. You have almost a year to get comfortable with the idea. -The arrival of the baby is weird. The initial feeling is relief because that part also seems to take forever. You have a strange new admiration for your wife because, Lordy, did you just see that? The baby seems fake at first but then lets out a cry to let you know it isn't. It's a new person that's half you, something you've known intellectually for months now, but it's dawning on you for real now and kind of blows your mind. -But are you changed then and there? No, it's a feeling that comes and goes. It'll crop up again from time to time, but you're still you, only now with a new and crippling responsibility. -What else is there to do but do it at that point? You do what the nurses say. You do what your wife says. You do what your mother-in-law says, but only if it doesn't contradict what your wife says. You put your head down and DO IT. It's not fun, but it's essential. Nothing has ever felt more essential, in fact. You don't have a chance to resent it or reflect on it much at all because if you can just complete the steps necessary to get the baby to sleep, you can watch a little TV. And you've never wanted to watch TV so badly. -Eventually, this becomes routine, but it's not a forever routine. Little by little, you're able to ease up on parts of that routine, and while new parts are introduced, you take them in stride because ... well, look what you've already gone through. But still, you feel the same. Or so you think. -See, this all-consuming routine, for as burdensome as it seems from the outside, has been so vitally important to you for so long that everything that came before seems trivial in comparison. Sure, you don't have time to do some of the stuff you thought you couldn't live without, but ... why couldn't you live without it again? What *was it*, even? It's hard to recall and certainly couldn't compare to the sense of purpose that comes with keeping a mini-you alive day after day. You're invested in a way only a parent can know. -And that sense of purpose only grows as that mini-you begins expressing thoughts and feelings and is required to interact with the world in ways that are amazing and terrifying. Those interactions will bring you to the realization that you have to instill him or her with values and that, actually, that's the whole point. You will die eventually, but your values, God willing, will live on. -And before you know it, the day will come when you can get back to doing those things you were forced to give up. Only now, you'll have little buddies (as many as you can stand) who are all too eager to do it with you. -That's how it feels right now, anyway. What a meaningful life I'm living. You might want to check back when they're teenagers, though.
