I’m a single father of a 4-year-old daughter. Six months ago, I married a woman who also has a 6-year-old son. My daughter stays with her mother while I fully provide for her, but my stepson lives with me and has been misbehaving. I went to buy him food for school but couldn’t find the exact one he wanted. A vendor who knows him asked why I didn’t guide him properly, and he shouted that I “don’t have sense” because there were no pictures on the food items. When the vendor corrected him for speaking to his father that way, he said I’m not his father and even mentioned his biological dad’s name. At night, he refuses to sleep and instead hides near the bed watching when I’m with his mother. When I try to correct him, my wife gets upset and defends him. I suggested he might be better off staying with his biological father since I’m struggling to manage his behavior, but my wife strongly rejects that idea every time. This situation is becoming emotionally draining and affecting the peace in the home. For anyone planning to marry someone with children, understand this clearly: you are not just marrying the partner, you are stepping into an existing parenting system, history, and emotional attachment. Without clear boundaries, mutual discipline agreement, and respect for roles from the start, love alone will not be enough to hold the home together.
