Around 2 to 4 months after giving birth, a lot of women start losing a shocking amount of hair.
They find clumps in the shower and all over their pillow, and it can feel like something is seriously wrong, but its actually quite normal.
When you are pregnant, estrogen keeps your hair in its growth phase longer than usual. This is why so many women have the thickest hair of their lives during pregnancy. After you give birth, estrogen crashes and all the hair that was held in place over the past 9 months starts shedding over the following weeks.
It grows back, usually within 6 to 12 months. But if your hair is still falling out past that first year, that is no longer normal postpartum shedding. Get your thyroid checked, get your ferritin checked, and make sure you are eating enough. Those are the most common reasons it does not stop on its own.
