I've never seen this before in my career: 28-30 year olds who refuse to use AI coding tools. You show them what they can do augmented (not replaced) with AI and you see in their eyes that they have no damn clue of what's happening. You can't work with these people anymore. Time used to pass over older generations slowly. Now it's passing over us at the peak of our careers. Sadly, adaptability isn't optional at this point.

@cherthedev Beyond the time it took, one thing I heard that stuck with me is that we relate to what human create because we relate to the human *need* to create.
Creating is more than output. It’s the transformative experience it has on us. It shapes us as much as we shape it.

We are impressed by old art because artists spent years to create their works.
We are impressed by ancient epic poems because they spent decades writing them.
We are impressed by the Grand Canyon because it exposes 2 billion years of past Earth.
AI is the antithesis of that.

A few weeks ago, people started to say "UIs are a thing of the past, focus on agents and making your products available to them". I was doubtful.

Prof. Donald Knuth opened his new paper with "Shock! Shock!"
Claude Opus 4.6 had just solved an open problem he'd been working on for weeks — a graph decomposition conjecture from The Art of Computer Programming.
He named the paper "Claude's Cycles."
31 explorations. ~1 hour. Knuth read the output, wrote the formal proof, and closed with: "It seems I'll have to revise my opinions about generative AI one of these days."
The man who wrote the bible of computer science just said that. In a paper named after an AI.

codex is by far a better coding model than opus - anyone who knows anything understands this but the whole industry should reflect on why opus is the most popular people assume whatever is the smartest will win but the old rules of product are still what determine everything

@kentcdodds Not because it’s a successful business model means it’s a desirable one. "Leveling the playing field" through ad-supported/freemium is not the goal, it’s a strategy that works wonders in an economy that fragments access to common wants and needs.

Everyone hating on ads need to come to grips with the fact that throughout the history of the internet, ads are what actually "leveled the playing field" for people who could not otherwise afford a paid subscription for services.
I don't love ads and I'm glad I can pay extra to avoid seeing them, but I appreciate the fact that they can be used to make these incredible tools sustainably available for folks who cannot afford a subscription.

@addyosmani Accurate. Still I’m happy to see tons of stuff shipped by people who never wrote code before, regardless of quality. Building great stuff requires going through this phase of high output. Now that it’s cheaper than ever I’m eager to see wild ideas from a new range of builders.

AI users are working longer because, for the first time, our tools can finally keep pace with our imagination.
But speed doesn't matter if you lack a destination.
When output is cheap, your greatest leverage isn't how much you build, but the taste to know what is worth building - and the rest required to see the difference.
