I often hear “one is too many” and it’s worth emphasizing that to go from a system that is 99.999% accurate to a system that is 100% accurate requires huge tradeoffs. Take airport security. A full cavity search of each passenger would be far more effective; but who would travel?
American Anne@Anne8065

@ReichlinMelnick One is too many! And, illegals are counted in the census as USC's, don't get me started!

The SAVE Act is a great example of tradeoffs! As written, it would require tens of millions of Americans to obtain docs that they currently don’t have to be able to vote, which would stop many U.S. citizens from voting in the next election. Is that a cost you’re willing to pay?
American Anne@Anne8065

@ReichlinMelnick Then, you shouldn't object to the SAVE Act

Over 100 immigration judges have been purged by the Trump admin already. Despite civil service protections, they've been fired on political grounds. The very concept of a fair day in court is being systematically eradicated by the Trump admin in its push for mass deportation.
Ximena@Ximena_Bustillo

April is brining a new round of mass firings of immigration judges - at least 10 so far. Most are probationary, from the class that started in spring 2024, but there are a handful who had been with the agency for several years past that.

@ReichlinMelnick I’m curious how she entered my country. Seems she applied for relief when her lifestyle became inconvenienced (similar to kilmar) Why not apply for asylum within one year per the laws of my country ? What work was she doing for a decade before work authorization

Ms. Batra was granted withholding of removal from India *decades* ago. She's been living and working legally (including for the U.S. government!) ever since. But with third country removals now a real option, TSA shared her data with ICE and they arrested her at the airport.

If Trump gets his way and the Supreme Court blesses the pretextual termination of Haitian TPS, tens of thousands of elderly Americans across the country* will suddenly lose their caretakers. *especially in Florida.
Kathleen Bush-Joseph@KathleenBushJo2

Why nursing homes worry about Trump’s push to deport Haitians Lower courts blocked the effort to send home Haitian immigrants, part of an already shrinking workforce in nursing homes. The Supreme Court will hear the case this month. washingtonpost.com/health/2026/04…

@ReichlinMelnick Will you be satisfied if the court makes Markwayne conduct a fresh review and interagency consultation that cures the “procedural defects then makes a new determination that Haiti “no longer meets the conditions” for TPS and terminates the designation.

Yes, you’re correct, that IS the pretext. By law, TPS may only be terminated if the “extraordinary and temporary” conditions in the country have ended, and requires the government to investigate and determine if that happened. So thanks for agreeing the decision was pretextual!
DiscoFrancisco@DiscoFranciso

@ReichlinMelnick "Pretextual", where the pretext is that Americans decided it's time for them to go home. The country won't fall apart without them. Your premise is ridiculous. It's not our job to ruin our country for you, dork.

American presidents are not kings. They execute the laws passed by Congress. If the American public does not like those laws, they are welcome to vote in new members of Congress who can pass different laws. But the President may not ignore the law on a claimed electoral mandate.
Matt@Matt95261

@ReichlinMelnick "Congress specifically designed the law to *insulate* the decision from politics!" I think you misspelled "from democracy." Deport.

Reading between the lines, they arrested this person for trying to "do things the right way" and get a green card through a family member. The message this sends is that it's better NOT to try to "fix your papers," because even if you're eligible, they may lock you up anyway.
USCIS@USCIS

An alien from El Salvador with a removal order from more than 25 years ago, was taken into custody by @ICEgov when he appeared at our Charlotte office for a family petition interview. Outstanding removal orders will not get past intense screening and vetting procedures put in place by the Trump Administration. When a judge orders removal, the law will be enforced.
