The product strategy here could be similar to @Flighty. Build a calendar app valuable enough that people feel compelled to document their personal lives in it. Once individuals start using it for their own benefit, build out the social side of it.

I wish I could look up my close friends availability like I can for coworkers. Planning dinner, trips, and activities together would be so much easier.

My boyfriend putting events into our shared calendar is like drugs to me

Idea for @WhatsApp - a doodle poll type calendar thing for friend group chats. Which becomes a register for social occasions. And then a calendar with reminders. Mark birthdays too.
