Yesterday I saw the future on LinkedIn, of all places. When nobody can believe what they see online because AI-generated visuals become indistinguishable from reality, we need a way to figure out what to trust. Yesterday I posted an image of a “new fridge filled with glass cola bottles and ID documents” generated by Dall-E. I was excited to see the “cr” icon in the upper-left of the image. This icon indicates that the image contains a “content credential” and that the web property (in this case, LinkedIn) supports the content credential standard. When you inspect the credential, you’ll see a CA gave OpenAI an x.509 certificate they used to cryptographically sign the credential contained in the metadata of the image. There are cryptographic properties of the content credential that bind it to an image, so I can’t alter the image or transfer the content credential to a different image. This is INSANELY AWESOME! I can’t describe the joy I feel when I see digital credentials solving a real problem out in the wild. Anybody interested in digital trust should be over the moon about this. Especially going into an election season, digital trust matters. A lot.
