@0xshei @deedydas whatsapp's limitations stem from it's architecture. it was great for what it was but the infra doesn't let it scale to what it's trying to be now: a social media platform of massive scale

WhatsApp may be the statistically best app we've ever made. It's a product manager's dream with its unparalleled addictiveness (DAU / MAU) of 87% and stickiness (M1 retention) of 86%, both #1 in the world while having the #1 most monthly active users for any non preinstalled app of 2.7B users. Here are the top 25 most used apps in the world by MAU on both these metrics. Some surprising observations: — There are now 15 1B+ user apps in the world, 8 by Google, 4 by Meta. — The 3 that aren't are TikTok, Telegram (!) and ChatGPT — Telegram has more users than Spotify, Pinterest, Netflix, Amazon, Snap! — ChatGPT's one month retention is #5 after WA, Instagram, Chrome and Youtube. 2yrs ago, it was been #20 by M1 retention — Shopee, a shopping app in southeast Asia, is huge and retains users better than Amazon! Useful way to break down consumer businesses especially within certain categories (X vs Reddit vs Threads is a good one). It's shocking how few new apps have been able to break through in the past 10yrs.

I think the next real human enhancement drug is going to be "Ozempic, but for sleep." Eli Lilly paid around 6 billion dollars for a company called Centessa, and the headlines say they're getting into narcolepsy. I don't think narcolepsy is why you spend 6 billion dollars. The drug they care about is an orexin receptor 2 agonist. Orexin is the neuropeptide that controls wakefulness. People with narcolepsy type 1 have lost almost all of it, which is why they can't stay awake, so the obvious move is to give it back to them. Then on the flip side, there's a small group of people born sleeping four or five hours a night who feel completely fine. e.g. Trump could be one of them. They wake up early, they're full of energy, they run marathons, they live full lives on half the sleep normal people need, and function completely normal. It's a real genetic phenotype called "familial natural short sleep." One of the mutations boosts orexin signaling, so they're naturally wired to need less sleep. So, you have a drug that activates orexin receptors. And you have a group of humans who sleep for 4-5 hours instead of 8 because their body already produces more orexin. You can see where this is going. Narcolepsy is the front door. The real win, if it works, is giving everyone four hours of sleep with the benefits of eight. If we could safely cut that in half without paying for it in health or mood, we're buying a decade of waking life. I can't think of a longevity drug that can offer that.

SITUATION EXPLAINED: What comes after GLP-1s as the next human enhancement drug? We asked @maxmarchione, founder of @superpower "GLP-1s, when developed to treat diabetes and obesity, are largely used to make people look better, to maybe increase energy levels. They're used for human enhancement." "I think the next big human enhancement drug is going to be something that allows you to sleep less but feel the same and live the same." "Eli Lilly has actually made a bet on this. They acquired a small molecule that targets narcolepsy... the reason they're paying $6 billion for this is not because it's a narcolepsy drug. It's because they think this same drug could allow normal people, average people, everyone to sleep four hours a night, five hours a night, and feel like they've slept eight." "This drug is an orexin agonist... higher orexin levels are what we see in people who have the short sleeper phenotype."

Google fired the guy that made the google workspace cli, because he made the google workspace cli. Lucky me, Google can't fire me. gogcli.sh
Justin Poehnelt@JPoehnelt

Two months ago I was fired by Google for creating the Google Workspace CLI. It went viral, hit #1 on Hacker News, gained thousands of GitHub stars and many thousands of actual users in just a couple days. It was an incredible, confusing journey, from directors and leaders asking what they could learn from the tool to getting grilled by legal about why the Google logo and brand colors are on the Google Workspace GitHub code repositories. I think the cause was that Workspace and certain leaders (and projects) were afraid of being disrupted. But the fear wasn't specific to my CLI, it was a broader fear in what agents meant for Workspace. Either way, the irony of my termination was the announcement at Google Cloud Next two days before I was fired that an official Workspace CLI was coming. I want this out there because it is easier for me to explain my story and it is an experience I want to fully own. It's also part of my healing. Nearly 7 years at Google was an incredible opportunity for me and I was fortunate to have wonderful teammates and a manager that fully supported me through these last few months. Thank you.

@infinitetofu Yeah haptics is very brittle in iOS. Even a notification can interrupt the flow. Even so it's only one of 3 feedback systems. Thanks for the feedback nonetheless. What was your favorite exercise?
