“It’s a very unique way of living.” This moment from an old video has always stuck with me. An American creator visits the Maasai in Kenya and shares how people in the West often live among hundreds without knowing anyone personally. The man he’s speaking with looks confused.

Longevity and quality require following natural inclinations, though a touch of force is sometimes needed to avoid slipping into inaction. Now feels like the right time to get back on track.

Regular posts took a natural backseat while on a short trip to Japan. I felt somewhat compelled to keep posting consistently, but ultimately decided it would detract from the experience. I have plenty of thoughts to share, and I will.

@ryanmjohnson @aaron_lubeck @culdesac Is the experience as a resident living up to expectations so far? I’d imagine there is some level of selection bias, since most people wouldn’t move in unless the lifestyle appealed to them in the first place.

Is it a 400 year-old Andalusian village on the Mediterranean? Nope, it’s a walkable build-to-rent project on the Phoenix light rail line. @culdesac

It’s an interesting idea that would indirectly force competition. If barriers to move and work disappear, you need to offer something attractive compared to other members of the partnership. Culture, lifestyle, and opportunity are all key areas where you must be able to compete.

#NEW: 76% of Canadians support the idea of CANZUK 🇨🇦 A proposed partnership between Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK that would allow visa-free work and travel while boosting trade and economic ties! 🇳🇿🇦🇺🇬🇧

If it weren’t for speed, is there any metric where flying is actually a better experience than travelling by train?

@itsaboutdoing @LindsayJS "It’s about leaving an impression, not flipping a switch." Thank you. I like. I just want to scream since it is so bottled up, but that serves no one.

What if the majority of 'NIMBYs' are 'soft NIMBYs' & are just reacting to awful architecture--but would get on board with density if it meant beautiful buildings in lovely walkable neighborhoods? After 5 years and hundreds of meetings -- we found that LA homeowners flipped from ~90% against to ~95% support with a recipe of: 1. Lovely architecture 2. Gentle Density 3-5 stories 3. Great walkability They liked it so much they would fight for it in their own backyards -- calling into public comment, showing up at hearings to ask FOR more housing. Research from @CSElmendorf & @dbrookman back up this idea that aesthetics play a big role in NIMBYism. If opposition to housing can be reversed with great architecture -- don't we want great design and beautiful communties for everyone?

NEW PAPER w/ @CSElmendorf & @j_kalla: An under-appreciated reason why voters oppose dense new housing, especially in less-dense neighborhoods: they think it looks ugly and want to prevent that, even in other neighborhoods. Some of what we think is NIMBYism might not be! 🧵

@Rightsof_Man @LindsayJS Rhetorically speaking, it’s important not to make someone feel what they’ve done or plan to do is “wrong.” It shifts them into defence mode and they’ll dig their heels in. Provide strong examples with verifiable success. It’s about leaving an impression, not flipping a switch.

@LindsayJS Amazing find!! Rhetorically asking, how can someone talk this to a city council meeting? To softly change their perspective? My town just built corporate slop in their master plan and created these for bike lanes. How to change minds.....hmm???

It feels exactly like the kind of city I’d love to explore. A near endless metropolis, and maybe the best place on earth to get lost. Safe, full of hidden gems, and a testament to what human will and cooperation can achieve. A true world capital. I don’t expect it to disappoint.

Arriving in Japan for the second time next week, and Tokyo for the first. I’m excited to visit the city I once wanted to live in. That idea has since passed, but I’m glad I finally get to experience it firsthand.

I firmly believe everyone should move away from home for at least a year or two at some point in their life. Ideally to a new continent, or at least somewhere unfamiliar. It teaches you a lot about life and even more about people. It’s worth it.
