@mattyglesias Communism is when private individuals raise capital to use their private property to create things the market demands (I.e. housing). Capitalism is when government appointed/elected bureaucrats forbid you from deviating from their strict rules/regulations (I.e zoning laws)

@GWBPatriot This is in fact, often, how fascist states work. They’re often vain, aren’t good at their jobs, and incompetently run.

The reason Andor is aging poorly for me is because I realized the Empire is insanely incompetent in the show and it ruins the whole "actually evil serious threat" thing In the prison Cassian was through in there were a total of like 30 guards in the entire complex, which was a vital slave labor source for the most important industrial project the Empire was undertaking The Empire sent more soldiers to antagonize Ferrix during Aunt Petunia's funeral because they are mustache twirling saturday morning villains instead of a serious entity

We need more stories like Andor, not just because it's good, but because right wing idiots hated it so much, they are still coming up with hilarious new contrarian takes to this day because they can't grapple with their own ideology being represented as ultimate evil.

@RosaLuxembae Probably consolidating power across an entire galaxy, across literally millions of worlds and trillions of beings. That requires an enormous level of state capacity.

It's actually weird how early the Prequels are set actually. In ANH the Empire is still struggling to consolidate power so it's unclear what they've been doing for the past 2 decades

There's something about geography that really affects religiousity. The Southern US is much more religious than the Northern US. Southern Europe is much more religious than Northern Europe. Southern Russia is much more religious than Northern Russia.

Graham Platner was recruited to run for Senate by a pair of socialist political operatives, Daniel Moraff and Leanne Fan, who determined that another prospective candidate had “a skeleton in the closet.” The Wall Street Journal published a rare interview with the duo on Sunday who revealed they paid “a whole chunk of money” to vet Platner but managed to turn up neither his Nazi ink nor many of his Reddit posts.

@constans They also added Orthodox Jews as Eastern Orthodox, and Messianic Jews as Jewish.

I should’ve caught this earlier but the DoD’s new religious classification places all pre-Protestant eastern christian churches not in communion with Rome as “Orthodox.” So non-Chalcedonian Orthodox churches and the Assyrian Church of the East are lumped in w/Eastern Orthodox

I think one of the most foul things you can do is to mock someone’s enthusiasm and earnestness. They’re dancing with him and he’s thinking ‘yeah keep going you stupid fucks this is great footage’. Rancid mentality.
LPC@landpalestine

In the film “Borat” the villagers were not actors; they believed it was a genuine documentary They were told that it would focus on rural life. After the film was released, they considered suing the Israeli actor Sacha Baron Cohen "We thought they had come here to help us, not to mock us."

@YukarinInfinity @TatsuyaIshida9 Kind of crazy then that Japan lost the war, had PRC and USSR do exactly that, and then still industrialized to be one of the top 5 economies in the world—all without a military.

@TatsuyaIshida9 So many comments are vile in response to your good work of shining a light on a narrative daring to negate the popular story of the victors. As far as the community note, there is always more context to be learned. Conflict is not so clear cut to blanketly villainize either side.

@buckrebel Extremely common in high cost of living areas. I lived at home until I was 29, moved out, pandemic happened, and moved back. I moved out with my gf/now fiancee at 30, and have been independent since then

Have you heard of a phenomenon where people over 18 still live with their parents? And- I don’t mean like they’re taking care of elderly parents. I mean that they’ve not moved out. A friend was saying sometimes they can be almost 30 and it’s still this way.

Like honestly "it's going to take us several weeks to tell you who won the election" is failed state shit and should be much more stigmatized.

Bill Gates hate is truly depressing. You can be a nice guy, stay way from explicitly partisan culture war issues, and save millions of lives. You can make your money building a real product that people use and appreciate. It doesn't matter. If you're too rich, they hate you.

@HannahDCox @jc2339505924 Ngl, that doesn’t disprove this thesis. You shouldn’t randomly have to invite someone to a four star restaurant to initiate a human interaction. These people are literal strangers.

Men are dunking on women over this trend when actually they’re just dunking on themselves. Women want men to have initiative, a plan, gumption, and yes, some ability to show them a good time. Starting off high will garner a lot more interest, this is a no brainer.

Ok, brothers in christ, this is the last one but it’s a doozy. This girl ghosted my friend OVER A YEAR ago. Zero contact of any kind since. Yes she responded. Read the text at 9:08 PM PST last night, responded a MINUTE later. Should he say "low cut, tight dress" ?

My favorite story about George Lucas is from a friend who worked at Skywalker Ranch during the 2000s. At some point production ground to a halt because Lucas caught employees playing Arma 2 mods. He turned the production room into a LAN party so he could drive around in a tank.

@abighoul_js Why are you writing essays, pouring your heart out, for a mediocre dude? Like, as a guy, I can tell you immediately that he’s going to be terrible.
