In 1932, Australia sent soldiers to fight 20,000 emus... and lost. 😂🐦 It feels unbelievable, yet it truly happened. During the early 1930s, farmers throughout Western Australia were struggling to cope. Vast numbers of emus crossed their properties, stripping crops and smashing fences. The result became one of the strangest wildlife events ever documented. In the aftermath of World War I, many ex soldiers received farmland. Then close to 20,000 emus migrated into the district for breeding season. The government answered by deploying the Royal Australian Artillery with Lewis machine guns and thousands of rounds. The birds scattered quickly, ran swiftly, and managed to limit heavy losses. Over several days, thousands of bullets were discharged, but only a small portion of emus were taken down.
