Maharashtra Cabinet approves reclassifying leopards from Schedule 1 to Schedule 2 in the name of tackling rising man-animal conflict. Why should this concern us? 1. Under Schedule 2, individuals will not face legal action if they kill a leopard in self-defense or to protect others when the animal enters human settlements. 2. Directives have been issued to officially declare leopards that enter human settlements and cause loss of human life as "man-eaters." 3. To control the population, the Central Government has granted permission to capture and sterilize five female leopards on an experimental basis (down from the state's proposal of 150) While public safety is a priority, moving leopards from Schedule 1 to Schedule 2, making it easier to kill them in self-defenseis a reactive measure that doesnt solve the root cause: habitat destruction. Leopards arent invading our space; we are expanding into theirs. Every time a forest is cleared for a new road or building, we are pushing these magnificent predators into a corner. Instead of reclassification, we should be focusing on: 1. Habitat Restoration: Giving them the space they need to thrive away from humans. 2. Corridor Protection: Ensuring they can move safely between forest patches. 3. Coexistence Education: Investing in community led solutions that protect both livestock and leopards without violence. We cannot just cull or reclassify our way out of a biodiversity crisis. Lets advocate for solutions that respect the life of every leopard and the integrity of our ecosystems. #SaveTheLeopard #WildlifeConservation #Maharashtra #HabitatLoss #Coexistence #WildlifeProtectionAct @CMOMaharashtra @byadavbjp @PMOIndia @AjoyDharmavaram @IyengarJayanthi @dilthi_gujarati @SpotzHaroon @pricatttt @Tara_Deshpande @deespeak @pvs000 ommcomnews.com/india-news/man…
