The Supreme Court has just declared that preventing 16 and 17 year-olds from voting is inconsistent with the Bill of Rights. Parliament cannot ignore that. It is time to make the voting age 16!!!!!!

Great to see our friends from ⁦@makeit16nz⁩ at Council today and to continue to support this movement whose time is well overdue. Local government needs these younger voters and voices! thepost.co.nz/nz-news/360670…

Upholding human rights is never a distraction. Local democracy is just that, democracy. And in a democracy politicians don’t choose who gets a say because they’re worried they might not like what they hear - especially if there is no evidence for their worry!

@carsbeersboats We don’t have a position on the age of criminal responsibility. They are separate issues with separate considerations. Here’s what we said to the independent electoral law review (that recommended lowering the voting age in its final report)

@makeit16nz Do you feel that if a 16 year old can vote, they should be trialed as an adult for any crimes they commit?

730 people took the time to write submissions on the Bill to lower the voting age for local elections through our website. Many more sent theirs directly to Parliament. They will never be read because the Govt ended the select committee process. That is undemocratic

The Government has asked the justice select committee to end consideration of the Bill to lower the voting age for local elections. They are shutting down public consultation. Young people will not even get a say on our own voting rights. That is a disgrace.

@DoubleElnz @fonc Sure, you can find the full response here under "Income tax collected from 14-19-year-olds" ird.govt.nz/about-us/publi…. Also, sincere apologies the $92m figure is from FY21/22 not 22/23. We'd expect the FY22/23 figure to be higher due to inflation etc.

@fonc 16/17YOs paid $92m in income tax in FY2022/23. Many work part time or even full time, often to support family. That’s not even mentioning GST etc

@makeit16nz Will they be paying tax? I’m guessing no, so they can vote and won’t suffer the consequences when a poor govt is elected. Doesn’t seem right.

@HankNicodemus Here’s what the experts at the Independent Electoral Law Review had to say about that based on the real science

Our (kinda) co-deputy PM says the govt doesn’t want 16/17YOs to vote bc they reckon some might not vote for them. Not letting us have a say on our own rights is a democratic outrage. Democracy is when voters choose their politicians, not when politicians choose their voters

Not only do they not have any evidence for that, but in deciding whether someone is allowed to vote it really shouldn’t matter who they will vote for. Democracy is when voters pick their politicians, not when the politicians pick their voters

Also, 16 and 17 year-olds very much do pay tax, many work part or even full time and paid $92m of income tax last fiscal year. You’d think a party supposed to promote the interests of consumers and taxpayers would support those taxpayer’s right to vote

Whether or not the Green Party campaigns for the rights of Act supporting 16/17YOs (and that’s a decision for them), Make It 16 certainly does. Whoever you vote for your right to vote matters. And 16/17YOs should be able to exercise that right
