I took a life-changing trip to Israel last month with 65 American tech leaders. I thought I went to show solidarity, but I came back humbled, inspired and full of hope.
I came back humbled in the way that only sitting with a father as he mourned the death of his son — a son taken hostage by Hamas on Oct. 7th and then tragically killed in friendly fire two months later — can humble a person. Humbled by meeting parents with children held hostage in Gaza for over 100 days that somehow find the strength to get out of bed each day and keep fighting for a better future. Humbled by the boom of every bomb we felt from Gaza as we walked through the desolation of Kibbutz Kfar Aza and heard first-hand accounts of the atrocities of Oct 7th. Humbled by an entire nation fighting for their lives, and yet defiantly living life to its fullest, knowing that to do anything else would be letting evil win.
I came back Inspired by a nation that knows exactly who its enemy is and what values it’s fighting to defend. Inspired by a nation that sends its sons and daughters to fight a war to defend those values because it knows no one else will. Inspired by a nation that pays the ultimate price, and yet is so sure of its calling it stands up straight in the face of World opinion. Inspired by a nation that knows there’s a time for war and a time for peace.
And finally, I came back full of hope. A hope that exudes from the essence of every Israeli I met, and which was transferred to me as if by osmosis. Hope that our capable IDF forces will safely rescue the hostages soon. Hope this war will be over soon and Israel will be victorious. And finally, hope that Israel will soon be reborn with a memory of what unites its people and not what divides it.
To David Siegel and @RonMiasnik, thank you for giving us the opportunity of a lifetime. And to @abbywallawalla, thanks for selflessly filming the whole thing (and creating the amazing teaser below) so the rest of us could be present for every moment.
If you’ve read this far and you’re a senior tech leader interested in an Israel trip of your own, please reach out to me. Rumor has is there will be another trip taking place at the end of February. But don’t wait, because last time over 100 people applied too late and sadly missed out.
