@ScarredForLife2 NCB recruitment crisis 1968 - Try the pit for 6 months. NCB advert in the Notts Free Press, 10th May 1968. Two months later the biggest pit in the Notts coalfield, Kirkby Summit, closed. Plans for a Super Pit trashed. The repercussions were far reaching!

@miningheritage I was given a copy of this 50 years ago. Super, and the illustrations are also by the author. The poetry is full of accurate local history, including the mystery of the missing Undermanager.

Owen Watson (1912-1980) was a pitman poet from the Heanor area of #Derbyshire. He worked in the local pits for 44 years, finishing at Ormonde Colliery in 1970. In 2018 his poetry was included in John Goodridge's Database of working-class poets. miningheritage.co.uk/owen-watson-pi…

A fantastic talk by one of our newest group members. Bob is a geologist who worked for the Coal Board and has a great knowledge of the faults of South Derbyshire’s coalfield, as well as how they were dealt with. He has agreed to deliver more presentations in the future 👍🏻
