1/n After an arduous but constructive peer review process, we’re excited to share the published version of this work. Lots of added goodies: science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

1/8: Super excited to share our latest pre-print from the lab, where in close collaboration with @kellogg_liz lab we show that through some pore behavior, the CRISPR-Cas13-activated membrane protein CRISPR-Csx28 pulls the plug on bacteriophage infection. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

@JasonSynaptic @DouglasYaoDY Still haven't figured out how to unify gravity with quantum theory, the basis set and laws are there, we're waiting, and most importantly the intellect with there. Come on super easy!

@DouglasYaoDY LOL..like these tech lords are any smarter than the average Stanford PhD student. This obsession with IQ/smartness by these people is creepy. Most of them made $$ through dumb luck and timing. Why is it so hard to understand that biology is bloody complicated?!

Peter Thiel said that the lack of progress in biology is partially due to a lack of talent. I think this makes sense. Something about biology's non-technical nature + people's inability to tinker w/biology outside of a lab/PhD make the smartest people select other fields.

@DouglasYaoDY May be we should just take off the table all the biological advances over the last 50-100 years and live your life. Talk with scientists cracking these problems and you might feel a little whelmed about your intellect

@anshulkundaje And the sheer sanctimony with this statement is everything that is wrong about this country. We've built up these people to think they're all lone wolf geniuses

Those "smart people" pick other fields because the learning curve to really understand how to model biology is very steep. It is extremely rare that someone can "engineer" their way to make serious progress on most problems in biology as compared to other applied domains.

@anshulkundaje Such a terrible take in so many ways. We're technical, it's their sheer lack of understanding the complexity of the system and the dynamics of the system and just the great unsampled unknown of the biological space that our human brains can't fathom. Peter Thiel needs a lesson

@deserteagle291 @DouglasYaoDY Nope, biology is way easier than physics or chemistry or engineering. Smart people don't care to go through 10 years of bachelor's master's PhD and regulatory hoops to do biology research

🦠🧬Our paper is live @CellCellPress: Genome integrity sensing by the broad-spectrum Hachiman antiphage defense complex authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S00… Through structural, genetic and microbiological approaches, we show that Hachiman degrades DNA… by sensing low integrity DNA.
