We lost today completely due to Popovic’s mentally ill decision to bench our two goal scorers against Turkey. How did we win against Turkey? Irankunda scored on the break in the first half. Turkey then had to keep throwing men forward over and over again, allowing us to continually devastate them on the counter attack. But that strategy only works if you score the first goal. If the US score the first goal, this counter attack strategy disintegrates, because you can’t just sit back and play Haramball like we did against Turkey. So why bench your most dangerous attacking player in the first half in favour of a 35 year old winger? Why make it ten times more difficult for the Socceroos to be able to score that first goal upon which the entire strategy depends? Just diabolical. Popovic was obviously hoping that we could hold off the US for 60 minutes and then unleash Irankunda off the bench against tiring legs. He was probably confident we could do this given our superb defensive performance against Turkey. But the problem is that you give yourself no backup plan if the US score the first goal. We had no attacking outlet in the first half. We were sitting back and just got continually sliced and diced. If we had Irankunda and Volpato starting, they might have combined on the break and got that crucial first goal for us. They uniquely have the skill and talent for that. Plus you could see just the whole team’s confidence and morale lift the second Irankunda came on the pitch. You can try finesse it all you want with over complicated tactics but the pragmatic reality is that we are already dependent on Irankunda. Stop trying to deny that reality
