I will never understand this take. Few thoughts: - conferences cost many millions of dollars to host - so many unseen costs that general public doesn't see (insurance, temps, permitting, security, food, dealing with cities, dealing with unions, etc) - venues are booked years in advance (about to book our 2026 [!!] venue, timing the market with future venue bookings is the single biggest risk for our biz) - sponsorship prices are based on supply/demand and demand is higher than it's been in years - our conference revenue funds lots of other things across the business that add value to the industry (journalism, podcasts, newsletters, etc) - i've seen the sponsorship decks for every other conference (something something glass houses and stones) - tickets are only $199 right now, $179 if group pass, or free if you're a developer The list goes on... Trust me, if putting on large conferences was so easy, everyone would do it.

Think about their goals, how can your news/story help them accomplish clicks, time on site, etc. Like any partner your journalist has goals and metrics too.

For an exclusive, this is critical because the point of an exclusive is the journalist is the best and only news source that covers the story at the time it's released (e.g. 9AM on Friday, May 17th). If you release any news prior to the embargo time, you burn that bridge.

@jonwu_ @fortyiq @AshleyStanhope Generally agree with this. Just one critique, you can easily get a pr firm for 10-15k sometimes even as little as 5k per month. 50k is a lot for a pr retainer. I really hope there aren’t startups paying this much for PR.
