@M5PAVS @_imey @TheBlackHorse65 How do you even form worldviews this unhinged when they're so easily falsifiable? If you believe all news is fake, how do you "know" any of this? Do you just make it up? Listen to people who made it up? How do you become so divorced from reality?

Fake news 24/7, just like all the crying about there being no Japanese children lolz it’s the same around the world. The media is the enemy. If you don’t know that, what are you even doing here on X? Nowhere is perfect, there will always be some level of discontent. However, the two continents cannot even be measured against each other and to do so is ridiculous. Traveling back and forth between the two cultures, the difference is stark and obvious. The west is in deep shit, long term. It has destroyed itself by importing massive numbers of people who hate the host countries and their peoples. Massive swaths of the west are no go zones for the native people and the native people live under war like conditions in many ways. The police are seriously militant, but usually only to the peaceful native peoples. Asia does not have this problem, as of yet. And it’s a far worse problem to have than a sluggish economy or some people who are depressed.

@JesusFerna7026 > I am still trying to process these numbers. This is the defining issue of our time. No. This is the consequence of the most defining issues of our time, plural. It's not something you can address directly, either we improve the world or we can forget about birthrates.

I have been posting repeatedly on X about the extraordinarily fast collapse of births across the planet: in rich and poor countries, in fast-growing and slow-growing economies, in religious and secular societies, under right-wing and left-wing governments, with high taxes and with low taxes. The pattern is universal. I knew this trend would continue. Still, the figures released this morning left me genuinely speechless. China’s government announced on Monday (see screenshot below) that births in 2025 fell to 7.92 million, a staggering 1.62 million fewer than in 2024, and that the total fertility rate has dropped to 0.93. Few economists have been more forceful than yours truly in arguing that births are collapsing, yet even I was surprised by these numbers. I was forecasting around 8.5 million births, not 7.92. To put this into perspective: if China could somehow sustain 7.92 million births per year from now on, its population would eventually stabilize at roughly 625 million, far below today’s 1.405 billion. In reality, as smaller cohorts reach childbearing age, births will fall well below 7.92 million. Hence, 625 million is a very generous upper bound, even under implausibly optimistic assumptions about life expectancy. Put differently, there were fewer births in China in 2025 than in 1776, the year the United States declared independence. I am still trying to process these numbers. This is the defining issue of our time.

@Zublai @Aella_Girl The problem with Stella is that she tries hard to write thoughtful stuff but the moment Twitter was taken over by Musk and culture changed, she basically gave up on pretending to have any principles.

@sebkrier @michhuan @guynamedjoshl Why not? Most of the present-day problems are sociopolitical, by this point. The world is overwhelmingly more than rich enough to provide food, water, housing, and transportation for every human alive. There is zero urgent need to advance faster, and AI isn't even beneficial rn.

I think a key difference between some AI safety advocates and me is that they assume we're in a world where things are going so fast that you need to proactively advocate for slow downs and scary comms today in advance of very powerful autonomous capabilities existing, and see no cost to this approach. In fact the threat of AI is implicitly seen as so huge that any impacts on growth are seen as tolerable costs. Whereas my model of the West is one that is inherently very anti tech to start with, getting increasingly old and conservative, and naturally enclined to over-regulate as it has done before countless of times (platforms, nuclear, data, housing etc). So I don't see a need to press the panic button now and cry wolf too soon. In fact I think you lose more credibility over time; safety should not be associated with luddism. And this is despite me fully agreeing that safety concerns are very legitimate, and that the more capable the tech gets, the more we should be paying attention to externalities, accidents and misuse. I think the pure accelerationist vibe is not particularly inspiring or desirable. I don't think we should do absolutely nothing, but activists usually really dislike suggestions we need more research. To the extent that I want strong interventions now, they're closer to the d/acc agenda: pandemic preparedness, wastewater monitoring, advocate agents, cybersecurity for critical infrastructure, state capacity improvements, better evaluation design, mass vulnerability patching, accelerated vaccine production, etc. But this stuff isn't particularly sexy and op-ed worthy unfortunately. To be clear, lots of philanthropies are finding some great stuff here, and many safety researchers are a lot more reasonable and epistemicly humble than activists and comms oriented crowds. So to be clear this isn't a rant against safety, but against overconfident/fear mongering media and discourse.

@sebkrier All of the overregulation you bring up exists not due to conservatism, but due to corporate lobbying to create barriers to entry for potential competition. It is not analogous to the need to regulate AI because the potentially catastrophic consequences for our entire civilization

@TylerAlterman Dude, every single technology we develop is used to squeeze people harder. There is not going to be "post-scarcity", especially nor if we don't stop all of the erosion of privacy, democracy, etc.

Post-scarcity is going to be one of humanity’s biggest spiritual trials. Our brains are wired to find material problems to solve. In the absence of these, we start to fabricate interpersonal & psychological problems. We are already seeing the start of this adjustment period

the last time I took mdma, I realized that my baseline “happy” state feels almost identical to what I feel while on the drug. Throughout my life, people frequently have asked whether I’m on mdma while I’m completely sober, which always confused me. However, now I get it. It’s pretty awesome that an emotion I feel frequently is identical to the most positively valanced drug!

@p0lar_fawn A 50:50 mix of intranasal corticosteroids and decongestant((o)xylometazoline) used in one nostril per night gives you most of the decongestant benefit with no real rebound or tolerance, as well. Also, get a sleep study, from a lab that's aware of UARS, not just sleep apnea.

@heyyoudvd @agraybee @Anthony__Koch I think my favourite part was when the white walkers massacred every single background character and not a single named one died, in a series defined by "anyone can die at any time". Sam wriggling on a pile of corpses as the undead just ignore him was the cherry on top.

Game of Thrones had a fantastic ending and I will debate anyone on that. I sympathize with the criticism about it being a little rushed, as it could have spread those final few episodes out a little more to make them breathe a bit. But the actual writing, the character decisions, and the choice to go with Bran - was absolutely perfect. People wanted some corny Disney ending, and when they didn’t get that, they threw a hissy fit. What they actually got was something incredibly well-written and thoughtful. But it didn’t comport with their expectations, so it became culturally cool to hate on it, even though it was excellent.

@jsuarez Honestly, in the current political and economical climate, success of AI is a bad thing, and you should never root for nor contribute to its progress. The fixation on LLMs alone is the second best outcome for humanity, right after the whole bubble imploding into nothingness.
