Is there any project that schematizes command line help (like man pages) to make it possible to automate building strongly typed wrappers around them?

@davidfowl Yes, the standard Dockerfiles generated by VS and templates are crazy. The simple ones you actually need most of the time are quite alright. But in any case the “dotnet publish” path ends way too soon and there’s no bridge, so no recommendation from me.

@olivers I think for .NET Dockerfiles are *more* difficult because of solution files and project references.

Yes .NET supports building and pushing OCI complaint images without docker files and without docker installed. #dotnet
Chet Husk@ChetHusk

@Aaronontheweb @Bnomine Yeah, we already support this for a couple years now as long as you only need single arch images. Docs are over at learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/c…, essentially use an 8+ SDK and run 'dotnet publish -t:PublishContainer -r SOME_RID' and you get a container. More options for push, etc.

@davidfowl I would say it’s a path I wouldn’t recommend to anybody because the point in time where they have to redo it all and use Dockerfiles is rarely far away. “docker init” is a much better general purpose recommendation.

@olivers Is it because you want to customize every detail or is it pretty common things you want to customize?

@davidfowl In a nutshell - in spite of what feels like hundreds of extra project file options, much of what is typically done in a Dockerfile is still impossible. You should have saved the time to introduce most of these options and emitted a starting point Dockerfile instead.

@BilliCodes Or… you could just learn how they work and write them when you need them. I think others might have said that, but perhaps it needs repeating. What’s next, “cool code snippets for your effort free programming projects”?
