Because Liberals aren't actually serious about deploying trains, they are just using these programs for graft and fraud. This was supposed to cost 33 billion dollars, and now is up to 120 billion, and this is all that exists. the Tokaido Shinkansen was built for about 40 billion in today's dollars. If someone can build a dallas/austin/san antonio/houston high speed rail in Texas for 33 billion dollars? I'm all for it. You can't or won't though.

@ShamashAran This isn't true, people are 100% serious. The only reason high speed rail systems don't exist is because red states generally wouldn't benefit from it and it would cost them more in the long run. High speed rail benefits from transporting people between urban centers.

I need a torque screwdriver that covers 0.4-2Nm, costs < €250, and works with 1/4" bits. Any suggestions? Wiha doesn't accept 1/4" bits. Hazet is expensive (€500+). Wera doesn't have a single tool that covers this range. So far my best option is this Stahlwille model (~€290)

@TheStalwart @heyitsnoah For example, sometimes after developing a new feature it does the obvious things and extends the test suite, sometimes it runs a smoke test only in an ad hoc fashion forgetting it has a test suite, and sometimes it just says "Well this is done and has no bugs whatsoever."

@SandyofCthulhu We need to have taxes to pay for stuff. We can tax real property, other property (through sales tax, or wealth tax), personal income, and corporate income. You can turn different knobs to have allocations, but in the end, you need to get a certain amount of cash.

I’m very confused about the number of people who think “property tax” is a sales tax on you home rather than taxes to pay for public services you use every day. “I paid off my home why do i still pay property taxes?!?!?” Oh, did you also stop using the roads and libraries and sidewalks and parks? @patgagnon_75 I had a US flight line driving license: I did not have to maintain communications with ATC. We did not have a radio. That said, I was never permitted to cross the runway, because no radio. So I had to go there long way around the end instead when going to the other side.

CNN report: A US Army F-35 fighter jet made an emergency landing at a US Army base in the Middle East after being hit by anti-aircraft fire during a mission in Iran. A CENTCOM spokesperson said the plane landed safely and the pilot is in stable condition; this is the first time Iran has hit a US Army plane.

idea: open voltage across two pieces of metal (say 120VDC) and move the pieces of metal close to one another in a liquid solution with a consistent dielectric breakdown (say for sake of argument, oh ~80εr) and allow the breakdown of said medium (idk let's use water haha) into a mini lightning bolt. Once that lightning bolt forms, drop the voltage (let's just wing it and go 24VDC :3) and dump 100+ amps through the gap in a few microseconds to vaporize the metal in an extremely precise and controllable manner. For fun let's put this on the desktop of every child in the country

@Guzzak @Jordan_W_Taylor The soviets definitely did not send dozens of nuclear reactors into space. The US didn’t leave 5 RTGs on the moon. Etc. Satellites use PV because most of them are commercial, and buying space nuclear power is expensive and mostly restricted to .gov use.

@orihara @Jordan_W_Taylor Still plenty. A pound of solar panels is worth a pound of nuclear power plant here on Earth where you don't need to take an 18 month trip for a bit of lithium shielding or a replacement cesiated hydrogen duct. There's a really good reason satellites use PV, not lil nukes.

Kilopower, the little Martian reactor that could: A miracle of simplicity & sodium. NASA was given the brief to design a super-simple micro-reactor for future Martian settlement, and it did so brilliantly by doing it unconventionally. A normal Earthbound nuclear reactor is complex, with banks of pumps, water & steam injection pressurizers, control rod actuation, frequent movement of fuel during refuelling cycles, complex systems of valves, back-up emergency coolant and deluge systems, boron injection… it goes on & on & on. A terrestrial nuclear plant is a triumph of safety-conscious system engineering, but it’s a busy one, and Kilopower dispensed with all of this. The intention for the system is that you could set it up, get it started and just… forget about it, pretty much. It has a small, solid core with no moving pieces except for the control rod which is designed to be moved on startup and then kept in place, unmonitored, for a decade at a time. The small size & low power means that reactivity effects are dominated by thermal expansion and are extremely stable. Low power designs (less than 100 kiloWatts thermal energy) make thermal management and irradiation damage a non-issue that does not complicate system design. Very low power level designs (less than 10kW thermal) feature such low burnup reactivity that movement of the control rod becomes a ten-year interval. A literal ‘tin’ wedding anniversary, marked out by tweaks to the control rod. There’s a quirky Martian anniversary gift for you! Even at much higher power levels, the stability is such, and burnup so low, that control rod movement would be something you’d only have to do occasionally, every few months or annually. In essence this is a nuclear battery. In all cases, the reactor is designed to handle worst-case transients such as coolant loss passively without any need for control inputs, further simplifying the system. Truly, this is a zen ideal: Feng Shui engineering, where less is more and the system simplicity brings reliability and safety, all in one. Perfect for missions to space.

@batteryscott @sdamico People who want to run 220v devices in the US want it so they can run high power devices (or foreign stuff). This will do foreign stuff, but not high power. You cannot run more than 1800W off a US 120V outlet. You will burn down your house. Even if you use a 3kVA transformer.
