@Ridermeister @marksandspencer It's hard not to read it as, in contrast to all that maths you don't like, here's some you will. But, it's also hard not to read the implied dislike of maths as we (maths teachers) are so used to seeing that from the media. Perhaps it's not really there in this case? Boo if it is

@mrallanmaths "Of course you can go, but you owe me 5 minutes at the end of the lesson." Or 10 minutes if you take longer than 5 minutes (always round up 🤣)

@overleaf Thank you for sharing. It doesn't impact the article, which is very useful, but you may wish to double-check the sin addition formula at the top.

@jamestanton It is possible, in both cases, to create N triangles with a shared vertex within the polygon. On a plane, the interior angles sum to 180N - 360 (the sum of the angles around the shared vertex). On the cube, the interior angles sum to 180N - 270 (the 3 right-angles).

A polygon with N edges is drawn on three faces sounding the corner of a cube. What is a formula for the sum of its angles? (How does it compare to that of planar N-gons?)

@MathsNot I'm sure the procedure was done by someone who didn't get any A levels but is doing just fine.

A bit of a long shot but there was a really interesting question it was something to the power of something else. They were quadratic and there were a few solutions. I remember enjoying the question but can't find it! I think it was from an @Advanced_Maths thing. Any ideas?

@Sheena2907 @Advanced_Maths I love these because pupils are always convinced they've got there after finding 4 solutions. I've had a lot of practice of my evil chuckle on this task. 😁

@TLanokia @oldandrewuk I once had this and replied asking, politely, for the reason for the meeting. No response. I eventually rang her PA who didn't know but said she would ask. It turned out to be about someone else. Afterwards, I said it wasn't right to be summoned without a reason. She giggled...

@StuartLock @EmathsUK Are you waiting to get it back still? I truly horrified my eldest by pretending to eat it, hack it up, and then replace it on her face. Her expression will stay with me forever 😂😂😂

Did anyone else’s Dad used to pretend to “steal” your nose and put their thumb through their fingers with their hand in a fist shape pretending it was your nose, but it just looked like a thumb? That was just my Dad, wasn’t it?

@paddymac_maths @MathsTechnology Exactly this. I always talk about replacing x when discussing transformations. I like throwing the second version as a "how else could we have done it?" problem, pointing out potential pitfalls along the way.

@MathsTechnology By successive transformations. Replacing x with x-6 translates 6 to the right, and then replacing x with 2x stretches parallel to the x-axis by factor 1/2. Or... Replace x with 2x to stretch first, and then replace x with x-3 (to give 2x-6), so a translation 3 to the right.

Maths teachers - how do you explain to your students how the graph of y=f(x) is transformed to give the graph of y=f(2x-6)?

@oldandrewuk Not supported by SLT. Teachers criticised for using it, often in front of offending pupils.

In your experience, why do teachers fail to follow the behaviour policy? (I've deliberately avoided saying how common I think this is, but feel free to comment on that as well.)

I'm planning some lessons for next year on binomial expansions, and trying to reuse the 'balls from buckets' representation a lot. Partly inspired by conversations with @mathforge about the idea of canonical models.
