I married my non-economist wife ~13 yrs ago. We moved from MT to Chicago to CO. We're raising two beautiful kids. She's seen my best... and my worst. But, the other day, she said, "I just want to know the counterfactual!" in regular conversation. That's love. Deep, deep love.

🚨📣Given that my LinkedIn network doesn't fully overlap with here, I wanted to share (repeat) some big career news. This summer, I'm moving to Penn State. It is a great offer professionally, but it is truly equal parts "whole family" move and job opportunity move.

Hugely updated draft of my paper with @BhagwatVineetb, @marinaniessner and Chukwuma Dim. If you saw an earlier draft, this version is much better. Check out Vineet's thread for more details. Excited to keep improving this research with LLMs as a lens into financial markets.

New paper w/ @prof_cookson @marinaniessner & Chukwuma Dim on using LLMs to measure investor disagreement. The basic question: can we capture how differently people react to the same financial news, at scale? 🧵 1/10

I’m at TSA and the Clear attendant is straight-up telling her customers that the normal TSA pre-check line will be faster. I do not understand why this company still exists. (I mean, I 100% do but it’s sad.)

@israelsen Oh, no, you reminded me of a coauthor who has "Ben" in his name, but not his first name...

I currently have too many "Ben"s in my life. One Ben coauthor; I'm discussing a paper at ASSA by two different Bens. Yet another Ben is discussing a paper of mine next week. To top it all off, the team who rebuilt our deck had 3 Bens on it.

For at least one journal submission system out there, if you ask a referee to review a paper on Thanksgiving eve, the automatically populated deadline is Christmas eve. 'tis the season

Honestly I'm pretty opposed to the idea of taking notes in class philosophically, and I basically never take notes on any talk I go to. IMO, taking notes distracts from actually listening carefully and thinking deeply about the content while it's being presented

A thing I recently learned is that overworking seems pretty bad for your health. For most of my 20's I was working 60-70 hour weeks regularly. I was otherwise pretty healthy, food/sleep/exercise wise, no bad habits, but around 29/30 I was getting sick once every few weeks

Really interesting paper suggesting that distinct prompts (henceforth the possibility space of prompts shall be known as the Pringle of Prompting) map to unique hidden states inside the model, letting you reverse from them (though not final LLM outputs) back to original prompts.
GLADIA Research Lab@GladiaLab

LLMs are injective and invertible. In our new paper, we show that different prompts always map to different embeddings, and this property can be used to recover input tokens from individual embeddings in latent space. (1/6)

And further validation in many field settings: theory says that prices should not differ by more than transport costs, provided price info is available. Here is what happened to fish prices when mobile phones were introduced in Kerala:

No, economists will look you dead in the face and call *this* science. The first image is theory - the second is the experimental demonstration of the theory. researchgate.net/profile/Vernon…

@KhoaVuUmn Yeah - maybe a good way to screen junior econometric candidates is whether they have a last name that can bear the "-it" modification. Tobin --> Tobit - yes. Heckman - Heckit. yes. Horton ---> Horit. Bad news.

@alexolegimas As far as I can tell though the kids are listening more to EDM/electropop-ish stuff where like, live instruments are just not really a thing. Live voice of course is I guess. Piano is dead, jazz seems dead, and rock guitar etc as far as I can tell seems well on its way

Classical piano is dying because instrumental music is dying. Once upon a time, music was made - could only be made - in real time with your hands and feet and a machine, and it was an art, a craft. Now, music is made by clicking notes into Garage Band

@alexolegimas Not much more than an empty bar. It takes a while to get the form & depth. Now my 1rm is around 170. Nothing spectacular, but last week, I was doing sets of 5 with a 2 count pause at the bottom. Nothing like it.
