He noted first amendment still protects hateful, vile speech but not credible threats.

was fun debate. I pointed out serious concerns, that are too “in the weeds” to discuss in article, but I don’t think the bill would allow me to sue @CAgovernor or @iGardon. I don’t think SB771 makes reprehensible speech illegal. But my concerns werent addressed & I didnt support

@HenrySternCA One example repeatedly used in that hearing: @iGardon calling @Patterdude a bald little man earlier this year on X. Asm. Patterson signaled he didn’t want to discourage that type of speech. Asm. Cottie Petrie-Norris then raised this point about that interaction with SB 771:
