Now that I've said something about Spotlight on Indie SFF, maybe I should introduce myself, the person behind this and why I've set up this site... I have been an indie SFF author since a small press published my first book in 2008. In 2009, I started self-publishing and never looked back. In the 2011-2012 era, I was briefly a bestselling author on Amazon. I qualified for SFWA membership but discontinued after a few years. I have a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and have been a small business owner (still am with Spotlight on Indie). I currently am a part-time office manager and conference organizer for a small organization. I know how to manage the minutiae and put it all together! I've loved SFF since I was a child (and saw the original Return of the Jedi in the theater when it was first released). Both my kids are big into SFF, which is no surprise since both myself and my husband are SFF lovers. I am a Christian before all things, a horseperson of over forty years (and still going, although he's mostly a fat pasture-pet), a cat mom, tea lover (not coffee), and mom to two high school valedictorians (I have to brag a little in that amazing achievement). I continue to write and, by the time I finish the last few books of my current series, will have written and published fifty books (mostly novels, but also some novellas and a couple of novelettes). Spotlight on Indie SFF is the result of several years of wanting to do something for readers and writers of fiction to help with matching the right books to the right readers. I don't like certain things in books and have tired of DNFing books, so I developed a system of rating content to help readers find just what they want. I was able to make this vision a reality and opened Spotlight on Indie SFF with the help of an amazing professional website developer. Spotlight on Indie SFF is like a storefront, not a marketing program. List your books with store links and provide readers with a way to discern what's right for them, which is the reason for my tagline, The Discerning Reader's Book Resource. I put in the money to make this happen and am making it free to list your books. I hope to build a catalog that readers can search to find exactly what they want and to host collective sales throughout the year. I've seen writers here post that they despise marketers, but I'm not a marketer. Spotlight on Indie SFF is like a stripped down Bookbub for SFF at the moment, but I hope to add more features as I can afford to pay the website developer to add them. Whether you're a self-published author or small press, I want to help you find your readers. I have more information on the Author page of the site for Authors and small publishers and another page for Readers. Check it out and submit your book details. You have nothing to lose; but, together, we have much to gain! spotlightonindiesff.com #indieauthor #indieauthors #sciencefiction #fantasy #writerscommunity #writing

Now that the website is picking up, it's time to consider upgrades. What exists presently was only intended as the starting point. Since I'll begin working with my website developer soon on the big update to the website that I've been wanting to do, what suggestions do you have for features to consider adding? For my part, I've been planning to add... 1) logins so authors/small publishers can create profile pages and manage them and their listed books. Along the same lines, we could set it up so that readers and reviewers could eventually also have logins with new features to be added to benefit them. That alone is going to be a costly upgrade due to also setting up MFA and managing account security. 2) Depending on cost to add it, I'd like to also set up a more detailed breakdown of sub-genres, like the BISAC codes used by retailers and possibly other tropes/details to identify within a given story or series. (We'd need to create a list of searchable sff book tropes.) 3) I'm also hoping to set up for pre-order books to have a special tag that would disappear on the release date (set by the author when listing the book). I want to create a pre-order section on the homepage for these. Other suggestions? Please brainstorm and comment; this is your chance to help build a site from the foundation to really work for indie authors and readers. It will also give me and the website developer something to plan and budget for the future. I have ideas from other sites but want your input. I won't promise everything will happen, but it at least gives me ideas outside of my own (or maybe confirms my own ideas). When I meet with my website developer, we'll discuss what options we can set up within my current budget.

@AagardKylee I know the feeling. I get Bilbo when his chosen human (hubby) is unavailable. He's such a big baby.

Thank you to the guest reviewers willing to share reviews on the site. Today, I added two reviews from @gabbrogirl, a fellow indie author with three books of her own listed on the site (Dragons of Dunmoray, Permafrost, and The Arid Lands). The reviews (Children of the Black and The Martian Incident) include the link to her blog where readers can find more reviews from her. Other guest reviewers so far include @jzpitts and @PatriciaRa6506. If you would like to share a review of any books on the site, let me know how much you'd like me to share (all or a portion) and where readers can find you online. The site is open to reviewers. I'm sure the authors appreciate the extra exposure!

@Misterdpriley @gabbrogirl Might I suggest a debut with few or no reviews? I think there are a couple of those, and I just set up one for tomorrow's book post... The Failed Technomancer. It sounds like it would be a fun read. But the choice is yours. There are hundreds of books on the site.

@JTrevorRobinson I want to express my consolation at whatever's happening. I'll pray for better times for you. In the meantime, stay positive. The only way to go from hitting bottom is up.

Zero Point by @dwpattersonsf is a novel in a new series of Quantum Adventures which extrapolates future, cutting-edge science from today’s research papers. Jack Carson had a stroke of luck; a great-uncle had left him land in Arizona. But that’s when Jack’s luck began to change, mysterious sights and sounds threatened to make his inheritance worthless as a center for the study of physics... You know that feeling where there’s so much to do that you wind up freaking out and doing nothing? That’s where I’m at, trying to get all my stuff moved into the house I now share with my husband. Please say a prayer for me if you can spare one.

@NRLaPoint @Critical_Scribe I don't remember having to read Miller, but I loathed the nihilism of Steinbeck. Did that man every have a happy day in his life? It seems like he only wanted to make every reader feel depressed.

@KWBussard_ I prefer Kindle (device and app on my phone) but my husband prefers the Nook app on his tablet. We're weird that way. 🙃

@Misterdpriley You put it so well without mocking and by being on point with facts in a logical breakdown addressing the issue.

Daniel P Riley@Misterdpriley·
Right, let's begin. You entered a public forum to announce the murder of an unborn child. Your "impossible decision", was, in fact, not impossible at all because you made a choice and then put up a virtual banner about it. - Lie The last 24 hours have shown you how terrible and wrong that decision you announced to the world was. Namecalling? That's inappropriate, but understandable if you're not a psychopath and understand that everyone you yell your murderous intention to also has feelings. Feelings that erupt as strongly as yours did when you made that awful choice. Also, No. It's not hypocrisy to say murder is wrong BY GOD'S DECREE. Ten commandments: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Another? Jeremiah C1,V5: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you. If God rewarded your dumb ass with a child, a gift that many are not given, you spat in His metaphorical eye through murder. Probably best not to bring God into this. The people "throwing stones" recognize the gift of a child, and they are experiencing intense emotions at you and your wife's choice to destroy one when they, themselves, would cherish the opportunity. Duh. Weird hill to die on, bud. Also, not the meaning of "throwing stones." There are two schools of thought about "Big accounts with trashy opinions": One - Don't post your premeditated murder on the internet for them to notice. Two - Maybe don't commit premeditated murder at all. Problem solved. No one would say anything if you weren't killing a child you decided was unfit to exist. And since you DID bring God into this, I refer you back to the earlier paragraph to explain that No, you actually cannot kill your unborn children simply because you don't want them. That's a mortal sin. You can live your lifetime, but God will have His say at the end, and for eternity after this one lifetime is over. Everyone talks about abortion and down syndrome, dude. That's a lie. I hope your story DOES reach people. I hope they see how utterly deplorable it is to kill the conjunction of you and your wife into a new and beautiful, God-given treasure simply (Yes, simply) because it may not be what you wanted it to be. I hope your story stands for time immemorial as a testament of selfish depravity. And I hope, years from now, you can accept what you did for its reality, not what you wanted to twist it into.
Jesse Ridgway@McJuggerNuggets

I’ve never seen such hate and vitriol for two people grieving the loss of their unborn child and making an impossible decision. The last 24 hours have exposed a side of humanity that is deeply disturbing. Being called “murderous pieces of shit, evil, compared to Hitler” and receiving NON-STOP DEATH THREATS. Seeing my 6-year old dog with Stage 4 Kidney Disease be used as a weapon, manipulating my words and intent in a tweet or saying we’ll regret this decision forever and must repent to God is absolute insanity. If you ever wanted to marvel at the depravity of people online, just check the replies on my latest tweet. It’s a shit-show of epic proportions. This is reflective of the current world and landscape we’re all living in. What’s more troubling is a lot of these people use God or Jesus as their justification for threatening us and wanting to cast us into Hell…seems pretty hypocritical. So many saying they would’ve kept the child, put it up for adoption or are suddenly ready to adopt a down syndrome child, that’s great! You can do all those things. However, many of the people throwing stones don’t even have children, let alone one with a condition and most likely will never do the things they say they’re going to do. There has been some heinous shit said about my wife and I on some extremely large accounts…It baffles me that there are such trashy-ass people who have significant followings. If you can’t contribute anything meaningful to the conversation aside from insults then just don’t post. On the other hand, there has been tremendous stories of people who kept their Down Syndrome baby and that’s awesome! Very courageous and they do look very happy! That is your choice and I support it. This was ours and we can do that. It’s very easy to accept the differences between us when it has no actual bearing on your life. What shocked me most of all was that this story has become mainstream news…A couple’s abortion is suddenly newsworthy in 2026…? There are over 1,000,000 abortions every single year for a myriad of reasons, this is happening on a DAILY BASIS and is the most common outcome for Trisomy 21, yet this one blows up and people are surprised…? The reason this blew up is quite simple: IT’S BECAUSE NOBODY TALKS ABOUT IT. I can’t blame people for not talking about these vulnerable experiences publicly because you see the disgusting backlash that ensues. It’s very divisive. Luckily, after 20 years on the Internet, this is par the course for me taking on the crazies, so I’m glad I can help further the conversation. That’s exactly why I wanted to share this story. People still need to see vulnerability and hear the raw truth. There is real suffering going on and it is being done in silence and fear. So many mothers have reached out privately commending us on our bravery to speak truthfully about this topic and we really appreciate that support! We want you to feel less alone in this and less ashamed. There has never been a more important time to speak up and out about the things that matter. Do not let the vocal minority stop you from sharing your truth. To those who have been affected by this or are confronted with a similar situation in the future, we have your back and please feel free to reach out. I’m sure this will follow us awhile especially when we try for a kid again in the near future. (CONTINUED)

Since I started daily book postings a few months ago, I've a few times mixed up X account attributions, but I have posted corrections. I don't even know if the posts help, but I wanted to do something here for books. Would you rather I keep posting a book/series each day or quit and save everyone the possibility of an occasional mistake? (With each mistake, I see what I did wrong and stay alert not to let it happen again.)
