Elections in Africa are going through a turbulent phase & the launch of the Integrated Framework for Protecting Elections couldn’t be more timely. A great resource for elections practioners especially in Africa.
International IDEA Africa & West Asia@IDEA_Africa

The Electoral Commissioner of Mauritius shared valuable experiences and reflections on the Integrated Framework for Protecting Elections. The launch concluded successfully with a rich and constructive discussion among participants.

@toneo1st @zenzele Not correct on Liberia, the 2023 Liberian General Elections was overwhelmingly positive, with observers hailing it as a critical milestone for West African democracy.

There is a common thing about Liberia, Tanzania, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. They all had sham elections, killed citizens after disputes polls and continued running national affairs like nothing happened. In short these are autocratic governments, but diplomatic language was used!

🇸🇪🇿🇼 Sweden will end its Bilateral Development Cooperation Strategy with Zimbabwe by 31 Aug 2026 as part of a wider foreign-policy realignment. The move also means Sweden will close its Embassy in Harare, Sweden stresses the decision is not linked to any events in Zimbabwe.Zimbabwe remains an important partner, with future cooperation to focus on trade, investment, sustainable mining, climate, democracy & human rights.Other African countries affected: Liberia, Mozambique & Tanzania.

They have destroyed the Boterekwa, Christmas Pass Mountains and other natural sacred sites in the name of mining. What is particularly disheartening is that, despite the severe land degradation and the exportation of financial gains from these activities, the local community is left with little more than dust, ruined infrastructure and forced, uncompensated displacement.

@FMaguwu @ChineseZimbabwe @nickmangwana I witnessed this disturbing environmental degradation en route to Penhalonga last week. Beyond disappointed, truly heartbroken. Christmas Pass road side will be next if this continues unchecked. These destructive activities will proceed without consequence. Urgent action needed.

@wasudigital @ZtaUpdates It’s troubling when public spaces meant for all are privatised and restricted. This limits access, increases inequality, &undermines the idea that community resources shld benefit all, not just a select few. Pub property should stay public. Its like privatising the Chistmas pass

Prince of Wales, Vumba is now in private hands (leased by Mutare Council). The owner put a gate yesterday, and soon people will be paying to have a view. @ZtaUpdates is this actually possible?

The top electoral court in Mozambique has largely upheld the results of the country’s disputed October elections, re-affirming the governing Frelimo party’s decades-long hold on power, and leading to fears of more violence in a country already rocked by weeks of deadly protests. In a ruling on Monday (today), judges of the Constitutional Council named Daniel Chapo as the next president, confirming that the Frelimo candidate won 65 percent of the vote, as opposed to a previously announced 70 percent. It also awarded main challenger Venancio Mondlane four more points in the polls, giving him a total 24 percent share. aljazeera.com/news/2024/12/2…

47 years old Daniel Chapo has been confirmed as Mozambique’s 5th president. He has a difficult start of his mandate: A country politically divided, a violent post-election crisis, a popular opposition leader (Venancio Mondlane) on the run and able to mobilize his base via Facebook. An important note from his speech is that he agrees with many of us: Mozambique electoral system needs a serious and urgent reform. What I missed from his speech: how he intends to address the security forces violent crackdown on protesters.

🌍 Maputo in Flames: A Nation at a Crossroads From the serene bay of Catembe, the city of Maputo is now shrouded in black smoke—a stark symbol of the unrest sparked by the validation of fraudulent electoral results by the Constitutional Council. As tensions escalate, one question echoes across Mozambique: Why can’t we foster dialogue to achieve lasting peace in our nation? The flames engulfing Maputo are more than physical; they represent the burning frustration of a people whose voices have been stifled and whose trust has been betrayed. Dialogue is not a weakness—it is a path to reconciliation, stability, and the dignity every Mozambican deserves. It’s time for leaders to rise above partisanship and prioritize the well-being of the nation. Peace must not be a distant hope but an urgent reality. 💭 What will it take to turn these flames into a beacon of unity and justice? #MozambiqueRising #JusticeNow #PeaceForMozambique #DemocracyMatters #HumanRights 🌟
