🚨#AfricTivistes strongly condemns the arrest and detention of Dr Sarah Bireete, human rights defender and recognised figure of Ugandan🇺🇬 and African civil society. Arrested on 30 December 2025, Dr Bireete was placed in pre-trial detention following her court appearance on 2 January 2026 and subsequently remanded at Luzira Prison. Her application for bail is scheduled to be considered on 21 January 2026. During her initial detention, the authorities did not provide clear and public information on the charges brought against her, nor did they ensure effective and immediate access to her lawyers, raising serious concerns regarding compliance with constitutional guarantees and international standards for the right to a fair trial.
