Email and VPN company @ProtonPrivacy announced that it has donated $100,000 to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society in Gaza. The result was swift and as expected: Proton customers unhappy that the money they paid for Email and VPN services… was being used for political causes. “Aren’t you supposed to do tech?” “Prefer you use my subscription fees for new and innovative products.” Proton’s CEO, @andyyen, stated the following: “Proton’s contribution of humanitarian aid isn’t expressing a political opinion, it’s expressing our humanity. Politics has nothing to do with it.“ Many responded by pointing out that this was distinctly lopsided politically — with @ProtonPrivacy donating large amounts of money to Gaza, while a terrorist organization (Hamas) remains in control, while the company never made any mention of (or donation regarding) the October 7th attacks on Israel. “Oh really? Then I’m sure Proton also gave to Israeli Magen David Adom (the local Red Cross) on the 7th October 2023, then?“ “I will not be giving you any more business. Funding terrorism is unacceptable.” “Consider donating 100k to a charity for the victims of October 7 to "even out" your virtue signaling.” “What steps is Proton taking to ensure this donation won't be financial support for terrorism?”

I think everyone is missing something important about the directives/“use x” drama. These aren’t alternatives to decorators or functions. They’re using to encode infrastructure decisions. They’re like comments that dictate where the code runs.

Stop for just five seconds... If you can't donate, there's another option: 1. Leave a dot. Just a tiny dot... but it might scream louder than silence. As for passing by in silence, perhaps you should reconsider your humanity. please donate. chuffed.org/project/148345…

Unfortunately, I’m fading 💔 With a heart full of pain I tell you: I was diagnosed with severe malnutrition from endless hunger. My body is breaking, my strength is gone, and I can’t afford food or medicine. If you’re scrolling, please leave a dot (🍉) — even a dot means we’re not invisible. chuffed.org/project/from-m…
