I mean, most caves aren’t lit that well and don’t remind you of (and aren’t populated by things that remind you of) man-made structures.
I’d consider that a fairly fundamental difference. A cave is eerie because it’s unknown. Backrooms are eerie because they’re almost familiar.

As much as I think these kinds of takes are hitting on very real attitudes of Gen Z, I also think that pathologizing the basic fear of an unknown dark enclosed space is a bit strange. There is functionally no difference between fear of the Backrooms and fear of a cave.

@AdequateEmily Backrooms, specifically the web series, does a great job of telling a story with these cookie crumbs and doesn't devolve into "loreslop". Kane has a real story that is already written somewhere, beginning to end, but that main story hasn't been told yet.

Seeing the way people have been talking about TADC and Backrooms has convinced me that “lore” is the enemy in storytelling right now, people demand you focus on needless worldbuilding and not just tell a meaningful story with themes and symbols you can apply to life itself.

@NewAtlantisSun I think it’s like the Emperor’s New Clothes. Everyone is pretending to like it because everyone else does, and so all you “scholars” are discussing the meaning of the deeper aspects of the film when there’s actually nothing there— some of you being paid to do it.

Backrooms was pretty good. Enjoyable midmarket horror/drama, altho the psychological themes were pure A24 bait on very well worn ground. Good aesthetics and nice act 3 protagonist heel turn.
