My cynical theory of stakeholder capitalism is that it was actually about management--PMC--telling capital owners to go fuck themselves. It was an assertion of PMC "stakeholder manager" primacy over corporate owners.

It is such a fascinating quirk of history--the sort of thing that is not at all structural but is entirely contingent--that OpenAI and Anthropic were both founded during the heyday of "stakeholder capitalism" as a theory that would replace "shareholder capitalism." The idea was basically that the people who own companies shouldn't be in exclusive control of what companies do, and that we need to bring in the "stakeholders" (which include ~everyone) to govern the corporation. Like a lot of ideas that came out of the left at the time, it was somehow both remarkably half-baked and also a new way of talking about a very old idea (socialism). If they had been founded in any other time period, OpenAI and Anthropic still may have opted for novel corporate governance mechanisms. Their founders would have believed that AGI required a novel institutional form no matter what, I suspect. But the fact that they were contemplating all that when "stakeholder capitalism" was very much in the water among US elites was not at all fated, and probably contaminated the whole "frontier lab as novel institution" project from birth. Both companies have made significant progress away from the naive model since their founding, to be clear, but the sins of the father are hard to wash away.

This seems under-discussed: both Anthropic and OpenAI are structured as "public benefit corporations", a form of corporate governance that didn't even exist until 2010. It was designed with a political purpose, to reject, even replace shareholder primacy, the Milton Friedman paradigm.

There is a red and a blue button. If you press the red button, you decide visually if the man is actually tall enough to speak to. If you press blue, you are condemned to an existence of femceldom unless 51% of your friends can draw a line at 6 feet off the floor +/- 2 inches

Criminal policy guy: unions are good, police unions just happen to be bad Transit policy guy: unions are good, the teamsters just happen to be bad School policy guy: unions are good, teachers unions just happen to be bad Maybe these guys should meet!

I’ve noticed a habit among my fellow conscientious liberals to take a default position of “unions in general are good, it just so happens that the unions involved in the policy areas I’m well informed about are bad” and never reflect on why that might be the case.

The Voting Rights Act redistricting discussion, particularly the dissent in Louisiana v Callais, pretty heavily depends on an assumption that blacks suffer some kind of slight to their racial honor by voting in a Republican primary in an 80% GOP district supremecourt.gov/opinions/25pdf…

I remember a 70s vintage science fiction story where some alien tried to mind control a guy by directly wireheading his brain's pleasure center, but it didn't work because the guy in question was essentially a divorced stone cold volcel. Ahead of its time.

Death Valley National Park is experiencing its first major superbloom in a decade as of March/April 2026, driven by record winter rainfall (1.7 – 2.5+ inches) that transformed the desert landscape with vibrant carpets of yellow, pink, and purple flowers.

@NewAtlantisSun unless your underlings consider you immortal (the bit in The Man Who Would Be King comes to mind) suggesting such a strategem still implies that they might be *trying* to kill you, even if you know they can't succeed.
