This seems under-discussed: both Anthropic and OpenAI are structured as "public benefit corporations", a form of corporate governance that didn't even exist until 2010. It was designed with a political purpose, to reject, even replace shareholder primacy, the Milton Friedman paradigm.




I’ve noticed a habit among my fellow conscientious liberals to take a default position of “unions in general are good, it just so happens that the unions involved in the policy areas I’m well informed about are bad” and never reflect on why that might be the case.




I think people underrate the extent to which California is broken because of (a) insane ballot initiatives, e.g. Prop 13, and (b) insane court decisions, e.g. CEQA. These policies would not have passed out of the legislature.







my wise commenter Rikard brings up the most salient weakness of all staged shooting scenarios: if you are the king, and your lackeys propose you cooperate with a “staged assassination” for whatever reason, you have to assume they are plotting to actually kill you.
