Is there another example of a fundamental interface pattern that is as hard to discover as command palettes usually are?

I'm completely convinced at this point that the "Command Palette" is a fundamental UI concept, and should be in all applications. It should also be a built in browser concept, there should be an API for websites to push items to the command palette ("new post", "muted words" etc)

@hobdaydesign just in general - presenting users with a blank chat input is just as "black box" as command palettes. without the instant search matching

I agree with this, although if
1. I have rich ui taking up >80% of the space within a chat thread, and
2. I don't usually want my first touch ui with my usual apps to be chat,
at some point it crosses the threshold away from "chat is the interface" into "chat is just part of the ui", don't you think?

@Wattenberger But what do you think of generative UIs? I think all of your ideas can live on the chat as well. I see the chat not as fully replacing every other UI but giving the user an unstructured way to access them more naturally

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:
Chat is the cli of ui.
jack of all trades, master of none.
perfect for rough direction.
but for any common tasks that are at all complex, I want buttons, sliders, sparklines, knobs, datepickers. Interfaces will continue to be rich, we just have a newly powerful gross navigation tool.

notice something? Linear, PostHog, Attio - all shipped the same thing in the last few weeks. Homepage is a chat bar - not a dashboard. This is the SaaS industry quietly admitting that traditional UI doesn't work anymore. Every user is different. One homepage can't serve them all. The playbook is shifting: → expose your core APIs → connect an agentic layer → let users use software the way they want SaaS became chat. Chat will become Generative UI - the agent won't just reply in text, it will compose the interface itself. We're closer than people think.
