I’m prioritizing Bl**sky for the time being because I dislike how much blatant bigotry and right-wing bs is now piped into my timeline; if you want to follow me there, I’m willthomas-usa@bsky.social

If you are a liberal, you should leave this site, especially after last night. Media environments are clearly the only things that matter and being here is only supporting El*n’s vision for the country

@bobbyfijan @saltiecashew It seems like you’ve voted mostly on local issues, which is your right, I guess, but I don’t understand why you’d expect Trump would do anything to improve urban education or quality of life, and esp. when he presents a clear threat to American institutions and the rule of law

I'm a theologically conservative Christian and a registered Democrat (Philly has closed primaries for local elections) In 2012, I voted for Romney In 2016, I voted for Clinton In 2020, I left it blank This year, I voted for Trump

@mattyglesias Fwiw I'm inclined to give @bradlander more credit for voting through the entire rezoning of Gowanus than Zellnor for supporting a single private rezoning

@hslatkin @nick_garber @GCPBID So strange considering how NYCHA needs more options rather than fewer; I wonder who was pushing for that at the council level

@willthomas_usa @nick_garber @GCPBID 1) contextual height limits for buildings utilizing the proposed reduced minimum distance between buildings 2) n/a at all for NYCHA - something two commissioners pointedly noted w/ displeasure

Gail Benjamin, a commissioner and former @NYCCouncil land use director, says she’s concerned about ending parking mandates, since many New Yorkers want more of it not less. Also wary of how the plan permits apartments near transit. Votes yes, but suggests council should modify.

.@NYCPlanning announces changes to 2 wonky but controversial parts of City of Yes plan before vote: • No longer allowing "infill" on NYCHA campuses • Continuing to allow off-site affordable housing to count toward a zoning bonus, no longer sunsetting that rule after 10 years

@GCPBID Odd bedfellows as some tenant advocates here to oppose City of Yes — I think because of the now-scrapped NYCHA infill — snap their fingers in support of the Staten Island Republican who essentially based his no vote on preserving suburban neighborhood character

@willthomas_usa @Park_Committee PATH doesn't like the idea because of how it would mess with operations, and there's no funding source anyway

A mix of industrial buildings and apartments along Van Wagenen Ave where it hits the PATH tracks, in the Marion section of Jersey City. The parcels along the tracks were recently rezoned to allow buildings as tall as 16 stories rather than the previously allowed 8 stories.

It becomes easier to tell people you’re a developer as you get older, because even the most ‘burn it all down’ types in their twenties become real estate-curious in their thirties. I’m continually surprised by this.

@aarmlovi There are still quirks to this; like is Northside Williamsburg fully gentrified as compared to the East Village? (I agree with your take writ large tho)

Union City mayor Brian Stack: unsung YIMBY MVP of 2024? His efforts to block this project in neighboring Hoboken to protect views from his donors' condo's parking deck resulted in a lawsuit. Under the settlement, the project will have 600 more apartments. nj.com/hudson/2024/08…

@berkie1 I’m kinda surprised that Boston would consider this before allowing happy hour or bars to stay open after 1am—is this just an area where they aren’t hemmed in by state law?

"Social districts," where you can buy a drink at a bar and walk around the neighborhood would be a great idea to boost the social life & nightlife in the City of Boston... Just ask Michigan. wgbh.org/news/local/202…

@RossBarkan The funny thing is that it’d probably be something like a version of good cause or the CPI+ anti-gouging laws passed in CA and OR, applied when the vacancy rate drops below 5%
Alex Armlovich@aarmlovi

👇NYS Good Cause Eviction's proposed rent cap of *1.5xCPI* is looser than NYC rent stabilization but tight enough to bind routine increases in modern NYC But comprehensive citywide TOD rezoning could probably keep market rents under that threshold for a long time

If you're a YIMBY who hates rent stabilization and rent control laws, what should happen to vulnerable tenants in the interim period until enough housing is (theoretically) built in major metro areas and suburbs to drive rents down? Building takes time.
