US ANTI-WAR ACTIVIST SHUTS DOWN PRO-WAR NARRATIVE
A US journalist approached Sara Flounders of the Workers World Party, her sign reading "Solidarity with Iran," with a pointed question: How could she stand in solidarity with Iran, when some Iranians were celebrating the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei? Flounders' response cut to the heart of what this conflict is truly about. She argued that there are monarchists who want the old, corrupt system of privilege back. But the Iranian Revolution of 1979 was built on a foundation of resource sovereignty—nationalising Iran's oil and using it for the development of the entire country, not just a Western-backed elite. That is what the United States wants to reverse. This struggle for oil sovereignty is the through-line of modern Iranian history. In 1951, Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh nationalised the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, ending decades of British plunder that gave London more revenue from Iranian oil than Tehran itself received. The response was swift: the CIA orchestrated the 1953 coup that overthrew Mossadegh and restored Western control. For the next 26 years, Western oil giants controlled Iran's production, disregarding the Iranian people. Oil workers themselves joined the general strike that accelerated the Shah's downfall in 1979. The revolution's first act was to reclaim what Mossadegh had won and lost. Today, that sovereignty means operating entirely outside Western financial control. Iran has developed mechanisms that bypass the dollar-dominated system. With China, oil is shipped in return for infrastructure projects—sidestepping the international banking system entirely.
This is what the United States wants to end—not just a government, but proof that a nation can exist outside imperialist financial control and can align itself with whom they want.
