TUIs make a lot of sense in developer tools. Not because they are superior (debatable), but because they keep you in the terminal which is (for better or worse) the ultimate developer environment. It’s simple, scriptable, remotely accessible, and enforces good practices (text based output).

TUIs are not good sorry yall a CLI is a utility, and situational. this should not be confused with stuffing a full interactive GUI into a low capability platform. "lets ignore all the great UI technology of the last 20 years and build some caveman shit"

@dreamsofcode_io plus they work through SSH :p the original post must be ragebait (or the dude making the post is a vibe coder). there's tons of amazing software that was made in a TUI + a lot of good tooling to make TUIs with (Ratatui, Bubbletea, etc.)

@dreamsofcode_io I would love a modern TIU experience with the same capabilities as a full GUI experience. Images + previews, actual copy/paste with no weirdness, persistent sessions (like tmux) built in…

@dreamsofcode_io Also, not having clutter makes effective use on screen real estate when working on laptop where screen size is limited. It really helps when you can easily stack multiple windows to screen at same time.

@dreamsofcode_io i like TUIs when the job is already terminal shaped. logs, deploys, queues, db inspection. the mistake is trying to turn every workflow into a tiny desktop app

@dreamsofcode_io The TUI is also the only other thing outside of a browser that is accessible remotely when you think about it. Hard to remote into a desktop app without remoting into the whole desktop GUI. But you can ssh into a terminal anywhere.

@dreamsofcode_io Whenever I work with Java or Kotlin, I open IntelliJ. For almost everything else, I work in a terminal. In the end, I use whatever has a positive effect on my productivity.

@dreamsofcode_io Not to mention, you can just malloc() and write 2GB of 1’s to be on par with electron, so you’re not giving up anything
