@dreamsofcode_io Not to mention, you can just malloc() and write 2GB of 1’s to be on par with electron, so you’re not giving up anything

TUIs make a lot of sense in developer tools. Not because they are superior (debatable), but because they keep you in the terminal which is (for better or worse) the ultimate developer environment. It’s simple, scriptable, remotely accessible, and enforces good practices (text based output).
David Cramer@zeeg

TUIs are not good sorry yall a CLI is a utility, and situational. this should not be confused with stuffing a full interactive GUI into a low capability platform. "lets ignore all the great UI technology of the last 20 years and build some caveman shit"

@icanvardar Ask an elderly person if they'd rather type in what they want the computer to do, or figure out an inconsistent mess of inscrutable "optimized" GUIs to do it.

@benhylak TUI's point out how broken GUI window managers are, windows are made for a narrow range of sizes, layout is always wrong for task at hand and assume one app is running, waste screen space with padding and widgets, devs think 2GB for a text input screen makes sense...

david is both right and wrong. a TUI is, from every technological perspective, fundamentally worse. there's 0 technological advantage. yet, claude code cli has a better ui than their app (and codex for that matter) so... why?

Oh how I wish the Codex app was native. It's so slow lately... Why can they not just make Codex rewrite it in Swift?

@icanvardar GUIs are a train wreck, little impossible bars get your mouse over to resize windows, windows layouts never match the use case, file names truncated, never able to use your whole screen, inconsistent icons, buried menus… horror show for the elderly too.

The Alamada airfield could be a neo-Shenzhen SEZ for SF Bay Area. Could be a 30% GDP growth impact on USA if truly deregulated.

Microsoft confirms Windows Run dialog is getting a modern look on Windows 11! - Modern design: A refreshed look that matches Fluent Design and Windows 11, with dark mode support. - Faster than before: Perf was top-of-mind when rewriting Run, and with a **94ms median time-to-show time it’s faster than ever before. - Quick user directory access: You can now type ~\ to jump to your user directory, then keep navigating just like you would from the command line. The modern Run dialog is slowly rolling out in current Insider builds of Windows as an opt-in feature, ensuring we are collecting your feedback. To enable the new Run dialog, you’ll need to: - Be on Windows Insider Experimental Channel. - Enable to Settings -> System -> Advanced and toggle on the new experience with the “Run Dialog” option at the top of the screen.

@zeeg I’m really done with resizing GUI windows, moving windows around and all the wasted screen space. An auto screen manager is what I need.

Just want to make sure I'm reading this right: Microsoft rewrote the run dialog with performance "top-of-mind", and the best they could manage to do when putting up a single text box was 10fps?
