YouTube has confirmed that they are removing background playback on videos unless... you pay for YouTube Premium. What a strange feature to paywall...

For those of you saying that this has been a Premium feature for years, yes that is true, but people were still able to use background play without Premium through the use of apps and extensions. YouTube has now stopped those from working.

@DeepHumor Charging for background playback is a blatant money grab. It’s about extracting more from users who already pay for a service that should be standard. This monopoly BS needs to stop. People shouldn’t be forced to pay just to listen in the background.

@DeepHumor never EVER pay for something which was free, specially youtube. In my case I use Firefox + Ublock origin (even in my cellphone, I will never go back to use the app). If somehow youtube does this I will just download the music as mp3 and use Winamp again. But NEVER pay for this.

@DeepHumor Meanwhile the official app has a massive stuttering/pacing problem that hasn’t been fixed all month. Also if you pause through PiP it will restart your video once you hit play after an ad has played. Why would I pay these people if the free version doesn’t fucking work?

@DeepHumor I’ll say it again: someone needs to make a carbon copy of YouTube to stop allowing these pricks to hold a monopoly on content creation. Everything getting paywalled is a result of YT having literally zero competitors.
