Short rest kills your gains Muscle growth requires maximum motor unit recruitment When you don’t rest long enough, you’re not limited by your muscle’s ability to produce force Instead you’re limited by metabolic fatigue, so you hit failure before fully recruiting the fibers that actually grow.

@gregogallagher So is this why you only suggest working out 3 times per week ?

@gregogallagher Does it start to have a negative effect if you rest for more than a certain number of minutes between sets? Because I tend to take long rest times (5 minutes between sets for compound exercises, 3 minutes for isolation exercises), and I’m strong but not very muscular.

@gregogallagher I hear this and then immediately watch a jay cutler video where he swears by 30 second rests between sets. Follow results

@gregogallagher Super Sets are designed to have very little rest between one machine and another. An Isolation exercise, for pre-exhaustion, to a compound exercise and people seem to get good results from that. But then again, if you take TRT or other steroids, literally any exercise works

The motor unit recruitment piece is why 2-3 minute rest periods exist. You need full phosphocreatine replenishment to actually express your strength on the next set. The people rushing through sets with 60 seconds rest are training their cardiovascular system more than their muscles. Nothing wrong with that if it's the goal. But most people in the gym want strength and size, not a conditioning workout.

@gregogallagher 2-3 minutes is a good reference time for rest intervals between sets
