When I first joined this app ~15 years ago, Wes Rucker was THE guy to follow. When I started covering the team, he was the first to welcome me - even though we were competitors. He was quick to compliment. He took his craft seriously. And he really loved his family. Heartbroken.

I was on the Tennessee beat from 2016-2020. Many don’t understand the local dynamics in college towns, but Vols sports are different. They’re covered like the teams of New York City - only it’s essentially the lone show for an entire state. The competitiveness is mostly unparalleled in other college towns, so when I was hired by VolQuest, it was like a North vs. South Korea feud between VQ and 247. The roots ran deep, and yet, through all the bitterness and back and forth, Wes Rucker was just Wes Rucker. Awkward and too verbose, but genuinely sincere, kind and well-intentioned. He played the game because he had to, not because he wanted to. We disagreed on some things, and agreed on many, but no doubt, Wes was a good soul who had already beat the odds overcoming a stroke and then raising a new family. What happened to today is devastating. As a father a newborn little girl, I ache for the thought of his family being absent of his presence. Hug your loved ones. Cherish life’s little moments. This all is so finite you never know when everything might get taken away. RIP Wes.
