@WesleyLHuff @Bloop_Scoops @AFpost @gavinortlund Symbolism in the ancient world meant a participation of a reality. It’s not an empty symbol as used today. It’s real. That is the why word “symbol” is used; yet it efficacious. It is very clear from St Clement's writings that he believes it to be efficacious--it's all over.

I hold to a Real Presence perspective as is (and I would contend should be) held by historic Protestantism. @gavinortlund has some great content on this topic over at his YouTube (youtu.be/JbPxgZ_AfOI?si…) I would argue that Clement of Alexandria (2nd/3rd century) could be very concretely pointed to as Patristic witness for articulating the symbolism and yet what could be (anachronistically) called a historic Protestant view of Real Presence. In ch. VI of Paedagogus he using both "symbol" and "metaphor" in relation to a the Eucharist. Tertullian does the same thing in Against Marcion, using "figure" and "symbol" for the Eucharistic but at the same time pointing to the reality of Christ's substantial presence being spiritually and tangibly amidst the believers during the partaking of the sacrament.
