John Wesley Hardin was one of the deadliest gunfighters of the American Old West, a Texas outlaw who claimed to have killed over 40 men. After years on the run, Hardin was captured in 1877 and spent 17 years in prison. While incarcerated, he studied law and was later admitted to the bar after his release in 1894. But his attempt at a new life didn’t last long. On August 19, 1895, Hardin was shot in the back of the head while playing dice at the Acme Saloon in El Paso, Texas. The gunman was John Selman, a former lawman and gambler. Hardin died instantly, ending the life of one of the most notorious figures of the frontier. Today he remains a symbol of the violent mythology of the Old West, where fame, guns, and grudges often ended the same way. On September 22, 1959, U.S. Navy pilot Lt. Albert Hickman was flying an F3H Demon fighter over San Diego when the aircraft suffered a catastrophic failure. As the jet lost control and began falling toward a densely populated neighborhood near University High School, Hickman made a split-second decision. Instead of ejecting and allowing the aircraft to crash into the homes below, he stayed with the plane and steered it away from the residential area. The jet ultimately crashed in a nearby canyon, killing Hickman but preventing what could have been a far greater tragedy on the ground. His actions are remembered as an extraordinary act of sacrifice. 📍 Explore the crash site and thousands of other historical locations around the world with Death Atlas. History happened somewhere.
